Position Summary

The Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the College and will be responsible for fostering a welcoming environment that will support faculty and students in their professional endeavors. Specific responsibilities include faculty development, academic planning and scheduling, academic advising, leading curriculum development, and building strategic academic relationships. In addition, the Associate Dean will serve on the accreditation team and other inservice groups/committees as may be assigned by the Dean. Preference will be given to qualified candidates with teaching experience in higher education as this will be an academic appointment with teaching responsibilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs for the Jacksonville University College of Law is responsible for: (1) faculty administration, (2) academic planning and assessment, (3) faculty development and engagement, (4) academic advising, and (5) communication strategies:

College of Law Faculty Administration

  • Assess faculty-related staffing needs to identify opportunities for full-time, adjunct, and other part-time hires
  • Assist the faculty appointments committee with searches for open faculty positions
  • Recruit and manage adjunct instructors
  • Facilitate faculty evaluation processes
  • Conduct performance evaluations for adjunct instructors

College of Law Academic Planning and Assessment

  • Create strategic course schedules and sequences to meet the needs of each cohort in compliance with ABA requirements
  • Collaborate with faculty on the development and rotation of upper-level electives
  • In partnership with the College’s career services administration, develop relationships with legal organizations and leading professionals to enhance the traditional curricular offerings
  • Identify, develop, and supervise interdisciplinary program opportunities, such as certificates and dual degree programs, as ABA accreditation rules allow
  • Manage, in collaboration with a faculty curriculum committee, the collection and review of faculty course materials to assess learning outcomes and ensure compliance with ABA, University, and College policies
  • Serve as a member of the College of Law assessment team and accreditation committee
  • Act as the custodian of the student handbook for the College of Law, which details policies including but not limited to academic requirements, grading, academic integrity, leaves of absence, dismissals, and student appeals
  • Chair the faculty curriculum committee

College of Law Faculty Development and Engagement

  • Develop and administer the onboarding program for new full-time faculty
  • Act as the custodian of the faculty bylaws for the College of Law, which details specific policies related to student contact hours, grading, evaluation processes, research expectations, and service requirements
  • Manage faculty development and research funds to support research, travel and professional development activities
  • Create and oversee a faculty workshop series to build a community that supports innovation in teaching and research
  • Manage faculty service loads to encourage teaching and research productivity

College of Law Academic Advising

  • Administer policies related to academic performance and standards, including admission, student employment, attendance requirements, grade normalization, examinations, transfer credits, academic probation, and degree conferrals
  • Serve as an academic advisor to College of Law Students
  • Serve on College committees to plan and execute student orientation and professional development events
  • Coordinate graduation activities

College of Law Communication Strategies

  • Coordinate with University Marketing on materials produced to promote and market the College and its programs
  • Manage updates to the College of Law websites and social media accounts
  • Manage and supervise marketing staff assigned to the College of Law

  • Experience with curriculum development in higher education
  • Experience with academic program development and leadership
  • Experience with mentoring and advising students
  • Experience teaching graduate-level law classes and demonstrated teaching effectiveness
  • Experience building partnerships at all levels of a university, including faculty, staff and administration
  • Experience with developing and executing communication plans, preferably in a higher education setting

Education, Certificates, Licenses, and Experience:

  • Earned Juris Doctor or other terminal law degree from an accredited institution
