Job Summary

The Academic & Student Success Advisor position is primarily responsible for providing student-centered academic and career advisement to undergraduate students in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Possible student workers. 


  • Using a student-centered approach, provide day-to-day academic advising to assigned students on degree programs, including course selection, academic planning, college adjustment. This includes students with majors and minors within the College of Arts & Sciences, those with interest in areas that stretch across colleges such as pre-health, and students who are undecided majors.
  • Educating students on university policies and procedures, problem-solving, decision making processes, and referrals to university resources.
  • In collaboration with department chairs and advising liaisons, develop and maintain curriculum guides for majors, minors, and concentrations within COAS.
  • Monitor student academic progress and maintain accurate records utilizing tools such as Starfish and Self-Service.
  • Provide reports and status updates periodically as requested to the COAS Dean’s Office.
  • Responsible for the registration of incoming students and responsive/visible during busy registration periods which could include some evenings and weekends.
  • Engage in student support activities such as new student orientation, first year experience, and advising weeks.
  • Assist with activities to support advising in the College, including training and support of faculty, as well as development and implementation of a peer advisor initiative.
  • Assist with student career development initiatives in the College; including internships, resume building, and LinkedIn profile development.
  • Partner with Associate Dean to think strategically and creatively about advising services and programs offered in COAS; Be familiar with and implement high-impact best practices to continuously improve the advising model; Develop enhanced understanding of advising and student success practices through engagement in professional development; Work collaboratively with a team, including the faculty advising liaisons, in the college and across campus, to provide exceptional services that prepare students for success.
  • Partner with Associate Dean, School Directors, Faculty Liaisons, and Department Chairs to enhance course scheduling.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education, Certificates, Licenses, & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in a related field
  • 1 to 2 years full-time work in a university setting.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach.
  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines.
  • Near vision sufficient to read written communications and computer display screens.
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone.
