Standardized Patient/Embedded Actor Application

Our Simulation and Standardized Patient/Embedded Actor Coordinator will contact you with more information and to schedule an interview based on the needs of the program.

Position Title: Standardized Patient/Embedded Actor

Department: Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences

Status: Independent Contractor, as needed basis

Position Summary: Consistently and accurately represent patient feelings related to health concerns, provide detailed personal health histories, verbalize/demonstrate disease specific symptoms, and allow the students to complete a physical assessment in a healthcare simulation setting. Provide written and verbal feedback to students and faculty/staff.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Memorize a case script and reproduce specific emotional, psychological, behavioral,  and physical symptoms as outlined
  • Accurately and consistently reproduce the case for multiple student groups
  • Remain “in role” during all simulation scenarios
  • Be interviewed, physically examined, and “treated” by students or healthcare professionals in the same manner that would occur if he/she were an actual patient/client
  • Provide focused constructive verbal/written feedback to students as requested
  • Interact professionally with students, faculty/staff, and other SPs
  • Maintain confidentiality of information related to student performance and simulation case scenarios
  • Be punctual and reliable

Special Skills/Abilities:

  • Previous acting experience is helpful but not required
  • Willingness to receive direction from faculty/staff related to case scenario
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Working Conditions:

  • Indoor, healthcare simulation setting
  • Physical assessments performed by students
  • Ability to sit, stand, or lie down for up to 4 hours (Some simulations may require more activity/mobility)
