JU Marine Science Italy

Jacksonville University is proud to offer a Signature Summer Program in Sorrento. This culturally rich program is designed to engage your intellect while you discover Marine Science, the Mediterranean, the Sorrentine Peninsula, and the Amalfi Coast. 

This 3 week program includes Marine Science courses and field experiences with cultural excursions on location in and  around Sorrento, Italy. 

This program is specifically designed for undergraduate and graduate students working to complete Marine Science  and field study requirements while experiencing the Italian culture through active engagement and studying abroad.

Course(s) & Eligibility

Undergraduate Courses

MSC 430: Tectonics of the Mediterranean (3 credits)
MSC 430:Marine Ecology of the Mediterranean (3 credits)

Graduate Course

MSC 690: Graduate Field Studies (3 credits)

  • Pre-requisites for MSC 430 - MSC 111, MSC 112, MSC 113, MSC 114
  • Pre-requisites for MSC 690 - graduate standing
  • All students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • No current JU Code of Conduct violations 
  • Swimming skills

Dr. Jeremy Stalker - jstalke@ju.edu
Dr. Jeremy Stalker is an Associate Professor of Marine Science.  He received his B.S. at Michigan State University; his M.S. at the University of Montana; and his Ph.D. at Florida International University. His research interest and areas of specialization include: Hydrology, Stable Isotope, Ionic and Nutrient Geochemistry, Coastal Oceanography, Geophysics, and Forensics. Dr. Stalker is also a passionate advocate of education abroad and the valuable experience it provides for students and faculty. He spent his youth traveling abroad with his parents and continues to honor the family legacy of international education by leading programs abroad with JU students.

Dr. Dan McCarthy - dmccart1@ju.edu
Dr. Dan McCarthy is a Professor of Biology and Marine Scientist at Jacksonville University.  He is a highly experienced marine benthic ecologist.  He has years of experiences conducting manipulative and mensurative field experiments with a variety of marine fauna and flora in multiple habitat types within the United States and abroad.  He has recently focused on research in the lower Florida Keys to investigate the influence of fish grazing in affecting coral restoration efforts.
