What is a Resident Advisor (RA)?
RAs at JU have many different roles. They are peer counselors, community builders, academic resource people, programmers, and administrators. RAs spend a significant amount of time getting to know residents as individuals and generating enthusiasm as they bring students together to create floor and hall communities.
RAs are responsible for other students, which means that a successful staff member must be sensitive to the needs of many different people. Recognizing differences takes sensitivity, understanding, self-confidence, and strength or character.
As residence hall community leaders, RAs encourage residents to respect one another, get involved with the floor, hall and area activities, and provide information about campus resources.
Finally, RAs are expected to be strong team players as members of a residence hall staff and Residential Programs. They are expected to display a commitment to the development of an effective hall staff.
- Resident Advisor positions are open to full time 12 credit hour, undergraduate students.
- Must have and maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 and be in good academic standing, as defined by your school, at the time of application submission, throughout your candidacy, and at the time of employment.
- Must be in good judicial/disciplinary standing with the University. Having a judicial history does not eliminate a candidate from consideration, but the nature of the incident(s) may have bearing.
RA Selection Process Overview
- Applications will open mid-fall semester.
- After applications are received RA candidates will sign up for a 15-minute interview
- RA candidates will be notified of their status to join to Resident Advisor Leadership JU 201 class in the spring.
- Spring semester - All candidates chosen for the class will complete a 1 semester, 1 credit course learning more about the RA position, leadership styles, and gain opportunities within Residential Life.
- After the class, RA candidates will be notified and if chosen, placed into their fall RA assignments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the minimum GPA to be on staff?
A: RAs must be a full-time enrolled student with a minimum cumulative 2.5 Grade Point Average which must be maintained during the selection process and during the appointment period if given a position.
Q: Is this a paid position?
A: The Department of Residential Life compensates each Resident Advisor with full room and half of a dining plan.
Q: How many credits will I get for the Leadership JU 201 class in the spring?
A: The JU 201 class in the spring will be a one credit hour class. It will meet twice a week.
Q: What are the actual job tasks of an RA?
A: Resident Advisors have a very complex position. The main pieces of the position are assisting other students by keeping them safe and healthy while living on campus. Other tasks include bulletin boards, creating and throwing programs for students, and weekly staff meetings.
Q: What is the time commitment to be an RA?
A: Many of our student staff members juggle an academically rigorous schedule, outside leadership opportunities, and this position very well. We currently have student athletes, most majors, Fraternity and Sorority members, etc. Residential Life will work with everyone's schedule!
