Third-party VPNs, iCloud Private Relay, and similar services

Third-party VPNs, iCloud Private Relay, and similar services

Summary

Third-party VPN (Virtual Private Network) services, including Apple's iCloud Private Relay,
route your devices' network traffic through servers managed by the VPN provider and their partners.  While this can improve privacy on public networks*, it can impact your ability to access Jacksonville University's services.  Third-party VPNs also interfere with Jacksonville University's network security monitoring, including anti-malware scanning of network traffic.

Additionally, Jacksonville University does not have any way of monitoring, supporting, or otherwise ensuring the performance of traffic being routed through Third-party VPN services.  Network Services staff have observed that devices using these services experience greatly reduced Internet speeds and frequent interruptions in network traffic.  These interruptions appear as if the campus network is experiencing an outage, even when it is working properly.  Disabling the Third-party VPN on the affected devices has been shown to immediately resolve these issues.

*VPNs can enhance privacy and security when using public Wi-Fi networks or otherwise untrusted networks, such as those at restaurants, retail stores, hotels, and airports.
