Professional Information
Dr. Michael Axler is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science at Jacksonville University whose teaching and research span cardiovascular and autonomic physiology, exercise physiology, nutrition, diagnostic ultrasound, and human performance.
His research examines how exercise, nutrition, and other physiological interventions influence cardiovascular, vascular, and skeletal muscle function. His work incorporates noninvasive physiological techniques including vascular and musculoskeletal ultrasound, arterial stiffness assessment, continuous hemodynamic monitoring, near-infrared spectroscopy, indirect calorimetry, and force-platform testing.
Dr. Axler currently leads research using portable ultrasound to investigate skeletal muscle morphology and vascular physiology and serves as Co-Principal Investigator on industry-sponsored research examining the effects of recovery and performance technologies on blood flow, strength, and power. He is also a Research Affiliate at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, where he collaborates on cardiorespiratory physiology and cardio-oncology research incorporating point-of-care ultrasound and cardiopulmonary exercise testing.
In the classroom, Dr. Axler teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and exercise science, with an emphasis on hands-on learning, physiological measurement, scientific communication, and the translation of research into practical applications. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Certified Sports Nutritionist through the International Society of Sports Nutrition.
