JAA gifts Jacksonville University Aviation Program $10,000 for student scholarships

September 28, 2023

The Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA) awarded Jacksonville University’s School of Aviation in the Davis College of Business and Technology $10,000 to be awarded as scholarships to students enrolled in the program.

“The JAA has been a long-term supporter of the Aviation program. Their continued investment in the success of our students through this scholarship program is indicative of their commitment to the aviation professionals of tomorrow,” said Capt. Matt Tuohy, director of the JU School of Aviation.

JAA established the scholarship program in partnership with the School of Aviation in 2020. Each academic year, scholarships are awarded to at least four students in the amount of $2,500. To date, $30,000 has been gifted for the Aviation Scholarship Program.

“We were thrilled to present $10,000 to Jacksonville University at our September board meeting,” JAA CEO Mark VanLoh said. “The money helps provide students enrolled in aviation-based programs with scholarships and allows us to play a small part in fostering the growth of our wonderful industry.”

The School of Aviation, accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International, started in 1983 and has grown to nearly 300 students this year. This fall, the program saw the largest enrollment of freshman students in the program’s history, double that of last year’s freshman class. Tuohy attributes the increase to growth in the aviation industry and the fact that students at JU get to fly planes in their first semester on campus. Next month, the Aviation program will be celebrating 40 years of training pilots and aviation management students.

The Jacksonville Aviation Authority operates Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) and the city’s three general aviation airports—Cecil Airport, Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport and Herlong Recreational Airport. The Authority, funded through user fees and not local taxes, contributes over $6 billion annually to the local economy.
