A heart for students: Honoring the legacy of Dr. Wayne Mier

Jacksonville University is mourning the loss of Dr. Wayne Mier, a devoted educator, mentor and friend who passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. As a cherished member of the Jacksonville University community, Dr. Mier was known for his depth of care, strength of character and tireless devotion to student success.

Dr. Mier was a steady presence in the Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences, known for his commitment to student success and his willingness to serve wherever needed. He built strong connections through classroom instruction, personal mentorship and behind-the-scenes advocacy — all aimed at enriching the student experience and advancing the college’s mission.

“Dr. Wayne Mier was a cherished member of our college and the JU community — an educator, mentor and servant leader whose impact will be felt for years to come,” said Dr. Mark Tillman, dean of the Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences. “He poured his energy into the academic and professional success of our students, always going the extra mile to ensure they felt seen, supported and empowered. Wayne's absence leaves a void in our community that cannot be filled.”

Across campus and beyond, Dr. Mier was admired for his humility, warmth and steady presence. His thoughtful approach made him a trusted colleague and a treasured friend.

“Wayne was a beloved professor, mentor and friend to our entire Jacksonville University community and beyond,” said Dr. Teresa MacGregor, senior vice president of strategic engagement and enrollment. “He led with quiet strength, always placing students at the heart of his work and offering guidance with generosity and grace. His legacy will always endure in the lives he touched.”

Dr. Mier’s absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege to know and work alongside him. The Jacksonville University community offers its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the countless students whose lives he shaped.
