Growing Student Inclusion Center & JU Community Celebrate Black History Month

January 25, 2019

Patrice Abner arrived on campus as Director of Student Inclusion in July 2017. Today, the Jacksonville University (JU) Student Inclusion Center teems with guests, mostly students, and some visiting for the first time.

Abner’s experience in community engagement, leadership development, social justice, and student advocacy fuels her goals for the Center. As a Jacksonville native, she felt a strong calling to encourage students in her hometown.

“The progress we’ve made together is encouraging,” she said. “Students need safe places and somewhere their voices are always heard. Our city needs that, too.”

By fall of 2017, gender neutral restrooms became a reality at JU. This was an amenity that students asked about when she first arrived, Abner said.

“Diversity: the art of thinking independently together.”

The Center also provides guidance to several student-led organizations. These include JU’s Black Student Union, International Student Association, and Ethnic Voices of Empowerment. This April, the Center hopes to introduce a multicultural commencement celebration. Graduation regalia representing minority organizations and LGBTQIAA students is in the works, too.

Among its ongoing programs and projects is the observance of Black History Month. The Student Inclusion Center continues to encourage the JU community to step up and step out. In February, there are many ways to do that:
