SangeethaKarri

Sangeetha Karri 

Sangeetha Karri earned her B.S., in Health Sciences at the University of Central Florida. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at Jacksonville University. After graduating Sangeetha wants to specialize in acute care and spinal cord injuries, as well as serve those in third world countries.

Currently, Sangeetha is the Senior Graduate Assistant at the Writing and Academic Support Center. This semester, she is overseeing the supplemental intruction leaders of the center. She is also the representative for the Florida Occupational Therapy Association, through the Student Occupational Therapy Association of Jacksonville University.

Sangeetha is from Orlando and is a true Florida native. She also lived in India for three years, where she attended school and learned to read and write in her native language. She loves to dance (was on a competitive dance team), read, go to the beach, and cook. Sangeetha chose to work in the Academic Support Center to develop her leadership skills, which she will carry on in her OT career after she graduates!

ShelbyHarpe

Shelby Harpe

Shelby earned her B.S. in Public Policy and Kinesiology with a concentration in pre-medical from Jacksonville University. She transferred to JU from Austin Peay State University in her junior year of undergrad. Currently, Shelby is studying for her Master's in Public Policy and Juris Doctor. She will begin Law School in August of 2024. Her law career will start this summer, as she is interning with the Walton County District Attorney's Office.

Currently, she is the Senior Graduate Assistant of the Writing and Academic Support Center housed in Swisher Library's 3rd floor. She oversees the graduate assistant team, writing consultants, and peer tutors. 

Shelby is a part of the Jacksonville University's Softball team, as well as the Secretary of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and Treasurer of Morgan's Message committee. Her hobbies aside from softball include playing with her two dogs, Bentley and Axel, reading, going to the beach, and shopping.  

Shelby's family plays a huge role in her life, not only as her biggest fans, but also her role models. Her mom, Julie, is a principal for private preschool and elementary school; this has helped Shelby be a leader as she has followed her mom's footsteps. At the end of this semester, she will be moving home to be with her family (dad, mom, brother, sister, and brother-in-law) before she starts her journey to law school!

taylor

Taylor Bates

Taylor Bates is a Graduate Assistant and will graduate in August 2026 from the dual Master of Public Policy and Master of Marine Science program. She is passionate about the intersection of public policy and science, and chose JU’s MPP-MMS program with the goal of making a difference in how knowledge of marine and oceanic ecosystems shapes how policy is informed. A Georgia native, she completed her B.S. in General Biology and Chemistry from Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Following her graduation from JU, she hopes to work in environmental policy consulting or as a government contractor with the EPA, or in marine mammal conservation. 

She enjoys working at the ASC because it gives her an opportunity to employ leadership skills while connecting students with JU’s academic services. Her hobbies include spending time with her dog and three cats (Cammie, Bear, Beanie, and Charlie), shopping, cooking, reading, and going to the beach. She also enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and loved ones back home in Georgia and across the world.

 kylie guernick

Kylie Guernick

Kylie Guernick is an Undergraduate Assistant at the Writing and Academic Support Center. She is pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics. Kylie began her career at the W-ASC as a peer tutor for Mathematics and now she works as a member of the student administration team. As she transitions and develops in her new role, Kylie is a member of the interview team, directly works with the Senior Graduate Assistant, and will eventually become the teams' lead Statistician. She is grateful for the opportunities being offered to her and is excited to see the center grow.

Aside from her position at the center, Kylie is a Student Ambassador with the Admissions office. She loves being able to meet prospective students and families, as well as demonstrate her passion for her major and school. She also enjoys working alongside her peers and has a lot of fun working with the admissions team.

Kylie's campus involvement also includes being involved in the Univeristy Scholars program, Math Society, Outing Club, and participating in intramural sports. Her hobbies include reading, spending time with family and friends, and watching movies.

Michael Hodgson

Michael Hodgson

A Florida Native, Michael is pursuing his B.S. in Mathematics with minors in Data Science, Political Science, and Naval Science. Previously a Peer Tutor in Mathematics, Michael is now an Undergraduate Assistant at the Writing and Academic Support Center located in Swisher Library. 

He is currently a Second Class Midshipman at Jacksonville University’s NROTC Program, where he resides as the unit’s Academics Officer. He oversees the academics, study hours, and tutoring for lower-class midshipmen. Once he graduates in the Spring of 2025 he will be commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy, where he hopes to begin a career down the Surface Warfare Nuclear Officer pipeline. 

Outside of NROTC and throughout campus, Michael is involved in the Mathematics Society, Outing Club, and intramural sports. His hobbies include working out, learning, playing video games, and hanging out with friends.

Jessymar Torres

Jessymar Torres-Torres

Jessymar Torres-Torres is an Undergraduate Assistant at the Writing and Academic Support Center. She is a biology major minoring in chemistry. She wants to pursue a career in Forensic science to give people closure after the death of a loved one or find the identity of unidentified people who passed away. Jessymar is from Puerto Rico but graduated high school on the island of St. Croix, which is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands. After graduating from high school, she decided to make a big move and attend Jacksonville University and plans to graduate in the Spring of 2025.

Currently, Jessymar is the treasurer of Beta Beta Beta, a national biology honor society. She is also a lab assistant for the chemistry department at JU. Before becoming an undergraduate assistant, Jessymar was a peer tutor for the ASC. She tutored biology and chemistry courses and enjoyed helping others develop academically.

Jessymar enjoys listening to music, reading, writing, and watching TV shows in her free time. Over the breaks, she enjoys going back home to her family and playing with her dogs (Crunch, a Hinata, and Bear). After she graduates and gets a stable job, she hopes to help her family as much as she can and visit different places around the world.
