International Healthcare Sorrento, Italy

About the Program

Jacksonville University’s award winning Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences is proud to offer a series of International Health Sciences with study experience in Italy. Offered exclusively during the Spring 2020 semester, this semester long program includes coursework at JU with a culminating field and study experience on location in Italy, focusing on International Healthcare. Students can either be enrolled in CSD 350/CSD 544, NUR536, or OTD 621, and will travel as a group to Italy at the end of the semester. This program is specifically designed for students studying Communication Sciences and Disorders, Nursing, and Occupational Therapy.

Students will compare the formulation, delivery, and impact of healthcare in the United States and Italy and evaluate methods to improve health outcomes and quality of care with special emphasis on reducing health disparities in vulnerable populations. Student participants will meet with professionals in Italy, including physicians and various therapists, the Italian Ministry of Health, and observe service provision in hospitals and clinics.

In addition, students will visit important historic and UNESCO World Heritage sights including the Colosseum and Vatican in Rome, Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Capri, and Sorrento. Students will begin and end their journey in Rome (FCO) airport and travel to Sorrento, Italy during the program.

How to Apply

Courses

Students will sign up for the course they require for their degree, but all will travel as a group May 3 - 12, 2020. 

Course options are as follows:

  • CSD350/NUR424/KIN187 or CSD544: Global Healthcare and Rehabilitation: A Comparison of Italy & the U.S.
    • Undergraduates can participate in the trip by taking CSD350/NUR424/KIN187 (3 credits)
    • Graduates will take CSD544 as a O credit add on to CSD508 (3 credits) in the Spring
  • NUR536: International Health Policy (3 credits)
  • OTD621: Level I Fieldwork in OT (B) (1 credit)
