Health Science in Ghana
Jacksonville University’s Keigwin School of Nursing, CCNE accredited and ranked by US News and World Report as one of the best graduate programs in the United States, is proud to offer Community Health in Ghana.
This course provides an overview of Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure and the healthcare challenges faced by nursing and public health in rural and urban communities in Ghana. Students will have an opportunity to explore various cultural, socioeconomic, and political influences on the health of a population through individual research and lectures from experts in the field. Students may participate in a variety of healthcare facilities along with rural outreach workshops focusing on health issues most prominent to the area.
Participants will learn about Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure and may work in a variety of healthcare facilities and engage in rural outreach workshops that focus on prominent local health issues. Some topics may include:
- Nutrition
- Women’s Health
- Reproductive Health
- Hygiene
- Family Planning
- Sanitation
- Infectious Diseases

Courses
This course is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Students will enroll
in the course during the Spring 2023 semester at JU. Classes will meet on campus
for the semester leading up to the travel dates in May.

Faculty Instructor
Nancy Robinson MN, MPH, CNM

Ms. Nancy Robinson is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Jacksonville University
Keigwin School of Nursing. She received her BA from Earlham College, and a BSN, MN
and MPH from Emory University. Ms. Robinson is a certified nurse-midwife and has practiced
in women’s health in Jacksonville since 1991, first at University Medical Center (now
UF Health), then Planned Parenthood, and Duval County Health Department. She formerly
taught nurse-midwifery at University of Florida. She is currently the practitioner
for clinics at the PACE Center for Girls, and Jacksonville Area Sexual Minority Youth
Network (JASMYN). Ms. Robinson's clinical and research interests are respectful birth,
and sexual health of at risk girls and LGBTQ youth.
Program Cost
Program Fee: $3,200 - $3,700*

- Vaccinations, as required by Ghanaian government (Yellow Fever/Malaria)
- Police Background Check (required to visit with patients - Estimated $100-$150)
