MAJORS & MINORS

The Physics Department offers following programs for students to major in:

  • Physics:- This option is intended for students who wish to pursue graduate study in physics, conduct research in physics, and/or teach physics. 
  • Engineering Physics:- This option is intended for students who wish to teach physics or engineering and/or work in fields related to engineering and physics that do not require a complete set of advanced engineering or physics training such as engineering technologist, lab technician, and sustainability. 
  • Minor in Physics:- This option is for students who have some interest in Physics but are primarily working towards other majors. Students who are interested in learning Physics, want to expand breadth of their knowledge, and/or improve their competitiveness in increasingly interdisciplinary nature of research in academia or industry would benefit from a minor.  
  • Physics Education:- Students interested in this option to teach at secondary level should consult with the School of Education early in their academic carrier at JU to determine the specific requirements.

While pursuing either of the options, the student acquires knowledge of the fundamental laws of the physical university, mathematical methods in physics, and great familiarity with research and laboratory techniques.  Physics Minor Requirements: A minor in Physics consists of 17 credit hours in physics courses, which must include the following:

Physics and Engineering Physics majors should work with their faculty academic advisor to make a degree plan during their first semester of enrollment and update this plan each semester. When making a Physics or Engineering Physics degree plan, please keep in mind the following course frequencies. Please refer to Courses section of this website for detailed information about the courses offered.

PHYS 101 is generally offered every fall semester.
PHYS 151 & PHYS 152 are generally offered every fall and spring semester.
PHYS 203 is generally offered every spring semester.
PHYS 208 is generally offered every fall semester.
PHYS 250RI is offered based on demand.
PHYS 305 is offered fall semesters of odd-numbered years.
PHYS 310 is offered fall semesters of even-numbered years.
PHYS 311 is offered spring semesters of odd-numbered years.
PHYS 413 is offered spring semesters of even-numbered years.
PHYS 410WS is generally offered every spring semester.
