Position Summary

Jacksonville University invites applications for a Graduate Hall Director (Graduate Assistant) position in the Division of Student Affairs. We are seeking dynamic graduate students, committed to our shared mission of building a student-centered learning community. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for programs, services, and initiatives that support the academic mission of the University, promote retention and student satisfaction, and provide students with opportunities for life experiences and personal development.

Graduate Hall Directors will work a minimum of 20-hours weekly on-campus in the Division of Student Affairs at Jacksonville University in the Department of Residential Life, enrolled in the Master’s degree program.

Essential Job Duties

The Graduate Hall Director (HD) reports to the Assistant Director for a specific campus area and is responsible for the day to day operations, services and activities of a university housing facility with undergraduate students. The Graduate Hall Director’s main responsibilities are to understand and analyze the climate in the complex(s), identify the issues and respond to all situations. In addition, the Graduate Hall Director will supervise the undergraduate staff and develop a team which will implement all of the activities, programs and services needed to create an inclusive community that reflects the mission and goals of Residential Life. 

The Graduate Hall Director will work in conjunction with the Assistant Directors of Residential Life and other staff in supporting the departmental identity and participating in the formation and implementation of departmental goals and activities. The HD must act as a role model to students through the support and communication of the Residential Life goals and through positive, acceptable personal behavior.

Graduate Hall Directors are an integral part of Residential Life and as such there are significant time commitments required of the position. Due to the unique nature of the position, Graduate Hall Director work cannot easily be translated into hours worked per day or week. The Graduate Hall Director job requires both regularly scheduled responsibilities, and times when HDs are available and accessible to building residents and staff at unconventional times. On average, HDs should expect to work 20-25 hours per week, spend no more than two weekends a month away from campus, reside in a room on campus, share in campus duty coverage that includes university breaks, and have scheduled time available to attend Departmental/ Division meetings and trainings. Hall Directors may not have any “fulltime” commitments (e.g., student teaching, internships, and lab assistantships) and must limit additional outside (non classroom) commitments to less than 20 hours a week. Training for the Hall Director position will include up to two weeks in August prior to the RA staff arrival and a week in January (prior to spring semester classes starting).

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a staff of up to 20 resident assistants
  • Attend and run weekly RA staff meetings weekly
  • Hold bi-weekly one on ones with RA staff
  • Assist RAs with programs and hall development needs
  • Serve on the on-call rotation
  • Serve as a conduct officer
  • Attend departmental and division meetings
  • Co-facilitate the RA leadership course in the Spring semester (first 8 weeks)
  • Assist with Fall and Spring RA training
  • Work move-ins and closings of the buildings

Required Qualifications

  • Admission to – as well as continuous enrollment and satisfactory academic progress in – a Master’s degree program;
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university;
  • Demonstrated leadership in the college and university setting;
  • High level of comfort with frequent student contact, with residing on campus, and being accessible outside of traditional office hours;
  • Ability to advise diverse student groups;
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully balance, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks in an active, fast-paced environment, while providing superior constituent service;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented, student-centered environment; and
  • Excellent oral, written, computer, problem-solving, critical thinking, and fiscal management skills.

Compensation

  • Stipend of $1,000/month from August 1 – May 31.
  • Graduate Hall Directors are required to reside on campus in housing provided by the university, with utilities and parking provided.
  • A partial meal plan is provided, subject to the schedule of on-campus dining facilities and budget.
