Position Summary

Jacksonville University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Sociology position. The area of concentration is open, with preference given to candidates who can teach courses in environmental sociology, quantitative methods, or research methods. Candidates must have a Ph.D. by time of appointment (August 2022).


Faculty positions at Jacksonville University require commitment to teaching, university service, and scholarship. The Sociology Department has three full-time faculty members, so faculty teach a wide range of courses. The successful candidate will teach four courses per semester, which may include Introduction to Sociology, Quantitative Methods, Research Methods, Environmental Sociology, or a course in the candidate’s general area of expertise.

Description of Essential Job Duties

  • Will teach four courses per semester, which may include courses in introduction to sociology, quantitative methods, research methods, environmental sociology, or a course in the candidate’s general area of expertise.
  • Must participate in college and university service.
  • Must develop a research portfolio related to political science and the selected concentration area.

Work Conditions

  • Primarily indoors except when traveling between campus buildings
  • Some off-campus travel may be required
  • Work is performed under minimum supervision and requires incumbent to exercise independence and discretion

Physical Requirements

  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and scientific equipment
  • Near vision sufficient to read written communications and computer display screens
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone

Prerequisites Required for Position

Minimum Education Requirement

  • Ph.D. in Sociology by the time of appointment.

Minimum Work Experience

  • Teaching experience in Sociology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to teach Quantitative Methods, Research Methods, and/or courses in environmental sociology
