Position Summary
The Department of Visual Arts, in the Linda Berry Stein College of Fine Arts at Jacksonville University, invites applicants for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Object Design position beginning August 2022. The Department is seeking a faculty member with an investment in teaching and a solid record of research and professional practice.
Candidates should demonstrate readiness to teach courses in Glassblowing, Sculpture, and Casting. The successful applicant will demonstrate cross disciplinary activities, highlight innovative scholarly work and show an active record of research, exhibition, and presentation. Candidates should have a record of successful teaching, making obvious their commitment to interactive classroom learning and integrating new technologies. Full-time faculty participate in student advising, admissions events, committee work, special projects, and contribute to the institutional community through curricular development, departmental operations and school governance. Service to the institution, college, and department is expected.
The undergraduate Object Design curriculum focuses on the interdisciplinary connections in the field of 3D and how they relate to and interact with the concept of object. The School of Art & Design faculty teach students to use objects as a medium for user and maker identity. Whether fine art, commercial art, or production art; Object Design thinking is at the core of the curriculum and its student experience.
Essential Job Duties
- Develop and teach courses in glassworks, sculpture, and casting for the Object Design program
- Demonstrate a commitment to teaching visual art majors/minors and non-majors, with a global and contemporary approach to teaching
- Demonstrate understanding of traditional and contemporary methodologies of teaching Object Design
- Balance individual and collaborative approaches to course content and curriculum arcs demonstrating the ability to ideate and carry out creative and challenging projects
- Introduce constructive criticism, analysis of student works, and links to works in the field as comparative components in the practice and content of Object Design
- Serve on thesis committees at undergraduate and graduate levels
- Collaborate with Studio Technician in management of 3D studio operations {facilities, equipment, and resources)
Special Skills
- Skills in glass working, and metals are preferred
- Skills in woodworking are desired
- Willing to collaborate with visual arts and media arts faculty
Work Conditions
- Primarily indoors except when traveling between campus buildings
- Some off-campus travel may be required
Physical Requirements
- Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard, other business machines, and 3D studio equipment
- Near vision sufficient to read written communications and computer display screens
- Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone
Prerequisites Required for Position
Minimum Education Requirement
- MFA in Art (or related field) from an accredited university
- 2 years of full-time teaching experience in Art (or related field)
- Strong record of professional achievement preferred
