Position Summary

The Marine Operations Manager provides support for the Marine Science Research Laboratory and its faculty, graduate students & undergraduate students, and serves as Captain of the JU MSRI vessel Larkin. Supervise work-study students in aquaria and general operation of  marine research institute. They will manage and maintain small boat operations, laboratory instruments, equipment, workshop, and the living animal collections in a safe and organized manner. Assists with equipment and facility maintenance and safety program management. Bachelor's degree and Captain (USCG licensed Master 100-ton or higher) along with technical experience in a related laboratory setting required. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Experience with safe driving procedures is required. Knowledge of marine animal husbandry, laboratory safety procedures, and the operations of biological laboratories and facilities. Ability to use computer technology to maintain records of various laboratory accounts and inventories. Good mechanical skills for routine tasks associated with boat operations and maintenance and completing general facility maintenance. Knowledge of lifesaving, first aid, safety and firefighting procedures, as well as commercial fishing and scientific sampling techniques. Able to demonstrate skills of piloting and navigation. Able to interact with and communicate effectively with all students, faculty, staff and general public. Other duties as assigned. 

Position is salaried with an expectation of working 40-hours per week but flexible hours such that evenings and weekends may be required. 

Reports to the MSRI Executive Director, expected to work independently and use sound judgment in the performance of all duties, especially those related to boating safety. Job requires the employee be able to lift objects up to 50 lbs. A valid FL driver's license is required. Occasional weekend availability is required.

Larkin Captain Job Description

Captain (USCG licensed Master 100-ton or higher)

The Captain is in charge of the JU MSRI vessel Larkin. It is their duty to manage the vessel in such a manner as to ensure the safety and wellbeing of faculty, students, guests and crew, and to conduct ship’s affairs in accordance with established Jacksonville University and Marine Science Research Institute policies and direction from the Executive Director of the MSRI. The university relies on the Captain to set a high standard of personal and professional conduct, and to maintain shipboard morale and respect for JU MSRI’s purpose and mission.

Essential Job Duties

  • Become fully familiar with the handling characteristics of the vessel (maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids, steering, , safety apparatus, etc.)
  • Maintain required logbooks according to established practice and in established formats.
  • Update and display all necessary licenses as required by the United States Coast Guard and other state and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee all crew, faculty and students and ensure that each understands and performs their assigned duties adequately.
  • Conduct emergency drills. Written drill reports will be logged.
  • Assist in repair and maintenance of all small boats/vessels/trailers used by MSRI.

Special Skills

  • Outgoing and friendly demeanor, able to engage and communicate easily with faculty, students and other guests
  • Familiarity with St. Johns River and the Jacksonville area weather conditions

Minimum Requirements

  • US Citizen, US National or Green Card holder.
  • Five years of experience working aboard or operating small boats.
  • USCG license with a minimum rating of Master 100-ton
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen, reference checks and background check.
