Position Summary

The Linda Berry Stein College of Fine Arts & Humanities at Jacksonville University invites applications for a full-time Gallery Director. The Alexander Brest Gallery serves as the front facing exhibition space for the College. Exhibitions demonstrate artistic trends in 2D, 3D and 4D works at undergraduate, graduate, and visiting artist levels through group and solo exhibitions, invitationals, and juried shows. The Gallery Director is responsible for the overall operations of the college’s gallery managing the annual gallery season, exhibitions, public appearances, gallery assets, signage, and spaces. 

Essential Job Duties

  • Manage the gallery calendar to fit with the academic interests of the college
  • Collaborate with faculty to create a variety of professional-quality exhibitions and talks
  • Manage exhibitions planned for gallery (contract, install, de-install, signage, lighting and documentation)
  • Maintain tracking of artists, artwork, handling and inventories
  • Coordinate with marketing for any promotional needs (catalogues, media blasts, signage, etc.)
  • Manage day-to-day operations and facility needs of the gallery; submit and track work orders
  • Coordinate repair, replacement and updating of tools, equipment, and display needs of the gallery
  • Manage and organize gallery storage spaces, hardware, supplies and equipment
  • Host all exhibition opening events and speak at openings
  • Serve as Chair of the Gallery Selections Committee
  • Manage the university permanent art collection including coordination of exhibitions and strategic expansion
  • Manage the campus public art collection including oversight of regular maintenance and repair of works
  • Manage the Student Gallery at the Arts Research Complex
  • Work with the event coordinator and faculty to manage the annual Festival of the Arts

Special Skills

  • Set up and manage social media for the gallery
  • Photograph exhibitions

Work Conditions

  • Primarily indoors except when traveling between campus buildings or managing outdoor signage
  • Some off-campus travel may be required

Physical Requirements

  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate business machines and gallery equipment
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by telephone
  • Vision sufficient to read written communications, computer display screens, and determine spatial proximities
  • Ability to move or lift heavy objects, climb ladder, reach overhead, work with hands and hand tools

Prerequisites Required for Position

Minimum Education Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in the Arts, Fine Arts, Media Arts, Art Management, Museum Studies, Art History or other related creative management field

Minimum Work Experience

  • Previous experience in a gallery or museum environment
  • Exceptional organization and written/oral communication skills
  • At least 2 years experience managing exhibition space
  • At least 1 year install and strike experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Social Media skills marketing exhibitions
  • Strong knowledge of the contemporary art scene including relations with artists, curators, institutions, or collectors
