Position Summary

The Dean is expected to be a champion for liberal arts education with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, to lead and assist the College's faculty in achieving effective, innovative, and visionary academic programming and faculty development. The Dean, reporting to the Provost, shall be the academic and administrative leader of the College of Arts and Sciences. The success of the College is highly dependent on the Dean’s strategic planning, supervision, assessment, evaluation, and fiscal management of the College's programs, including recruitment and retention of qualified faculty and academic administrators. The Dean is also expected to raise funds and contribute to efforts in enrollment and retention through collaboration with other constituents in the University.

Essential Job Duties

  • Demonstrate an appreciation of, and commitment to shared governance and a willingness to advocate for the needs of the College of Arts and Sciences and its faculty
  • Foster and develop collaborative initiatives within the College, with the Public Policy and Marine Science Institutes, other units across the University, and the larger Jacksonville community
  • Seek financial support for the College through grant applications and fundraising in cooperation with Institutional Advancement
  • Provide direction for professional accreditation and academic program assessment
  • A commitment to engaged learning programs such as undergraduate research, service-learning, study abroad, and internships
  • Support and promote the liberal arts in higher education and society

Prerequisites Required for Position

Minimum Education Requirement

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in an appropriate discipline for the College

Minimum Work Experience

  • A record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and administration at the level required for appointment to the rank of professor

Preferred Qualifications

  •  Earned doctorate from an accredited institution in an appropriate discipline for the College
  • A record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and administration at the level required for appointment to the rank of professor
  • Advanced leadership experience in academic organizations
  • Experience working in a tenure environment
  • Experience cultivating community partnerships
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
