Position Summary

The Counselor and Community Engagement Coordinator position in the Student Counseling Center is responsible for the planning, coordination, and assessment of the center’s community engagement initiatives.  Additional responsibilities include providing mental health counseling, crisis management, consultation, and outreach services to the Jacksonville University community.

Essential Job Duties

  • Coordinate the Center’s mental health and wellness related community engagement activities 
  • Develop and coordinate mental health skills workshops and/or skill building classes and/or groups 
  • Assess and coordinate embedded counselor staffing models in response to changing needs 
  • Assessment and data collection of community engagement activities
  • Provide mental health counseling and psychotherapy services to students 
  • Provide crisis management and consultation services to the entire campus community 
  • Provide psycho-educational in-person as well as web-based and/or social media outreach programming to the campus community 
  • Develop and manage all website and social media activities of the Student Counseling Center 
  • Liaison for Student Counseling Center with other JU departments and/or JU initiatives as well as larger Jacksonville community partners 
  • Evening and weekend responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Student Counseling

  • Extensive knowledge and good judgment in the application of complex principles of human behavior and student development theories 
  • Ability to develop and maintain a strong therapeutic alliance with clients 
  • Ability to provide clinical assessments of danger to self and others and make treatment decisions on the basis of such assessments 
  • Ability to provide appropriate clinical supervision and consultation 
  • Good oral, nonverbal, written, and listening communication skills 
  • Ability to understand and apply ethical and legal considerations relevant to mental health work 
  • An understanding of the use of technology to enhance community engagement within the mental health fields ethical guidelines. 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills  
  • Ability to work in a multi-faceted environment with crisis situations and with people with emotional problems 

Work Conditions

  • Work is primarily indoors but requires incumbent to be in an outdoor environment when travelling between campus buildings or engaging in relevant outreach activities; 
  • Standard office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment or supplies weighing up to 40 pounds; 
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time; 
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person or by phone. 

Prerequisites Required for Position

Minimum Education Requirement

  • Master’s degree in counseling or related mental health profession.  License eligible in the State of Florida within 2 years. 

Minimum Work Experience

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in counseling or related mental health field; 
  • Licensure in a mental health related field in the State of Florida; 
  • Community Engagement planning experience; 
  • Experience with use of technology to reach target populations.
