Archive: Hurricane Irma Update #10
Monday, September 11, at 5:30 p.m.
Changes since the last update
Weather in our area is improving. We’re seeing much less rain now. Standing water and strong winds are still an issue, and they will likely remain so through the afternoon and evening. Conditions have improved enough for our dedicated Campus Security officers and facilities services staff to begin assessing campus.
While we have confidence that, by Thursday, we will have cleared the trees and other debris preventing safe travel on campus, and that we can ensure the safety and comfort of our students, we are not operating at full utility capacity.
We do not yet have our power fully restored to campus. Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) has placed a priority on our campus to restore all parts of campus to full utilities. We are, as yet, unsure of the completion timeline for this work given the magnitude of the efforts here in Jacksonville. Hundreds of thousands of customers, including hospitals and private citizens alike, are without power at this time, and JEA began working to assess and repair damages to the city’s power grid as soon as it was safe to do so.
JU is operating on partial power that allows us to keep our food stores safe and run several other essential functions, but we cannot provide air conditioning and outlets until JEA completes their work here on campus.
Because our access to full utilities may impact our ability to be up and running by Thursday, we will be making a decision by no later than noon tomorrow (Tuesday) on when to reopen campus.
We realize our decisions have an impact on your student and your family's decisions, and we are using all available resources to gather information to assist in responding as quickly and wisely as possible.
Notes for students
Now that students can move about South campus, we have consolidated all dining back into Oak Hall to provide the best experience possible. We will continue to serve in Oak through tomorrow and up until the Riverview Dining Hall is up and running. Meal availability has also been extended to two-hour blocks, so the schedule is:
- Dinner tonight from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Breakfast Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
- Lunch Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Dinner Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
If power returns in time, we will plan to move dining back to Riverview Dining Hall on Wednesday. Please continue to follow university communications for updates.
This has been a devastating event for the city of Jacksonville and the state of Florida, and some of you have already asked if you can help with cleanup. You are incredible students, and we’re grateful for you. We are working to arrange volunteer opportunities, and Res Life staff will share details as soon as they are available.
If you left campus...
Please stay where you are. Do not try to come back to campus yet.
First, the roads of Jacksonville may not be safe yet. Bridges have started to reopen, but standing water, debris, and power outages have rendered many roads around the city impassable.
Second, tonight we began assessing North Hall and the Villages, but our assessment is not yet complete. We are prioritizing the residence halls so that you can get back into your normal living assignments. When we have determined that it is safe for you to return to your rooms, we will send out the ‘all-clear’ to let you know. Until then, please stay where you are. This also means that our students who stayed on campus will remain in south campus housing until we have cleared the north campus residence halls.
