Overview of Entry Points into the Nursing Program

 Thank you for your interest in the Keigwin School of Nursing program at Jacksonville University.  Please note that we offer many different nursing tracks, including entry for first time freshmen, traditional students, second degree students, officer commissioning applicants and RN-BSN options.

Admissions Requirements:

  • Complete an online application
  • $30 application fee
  • Admissions Essay - 1 to 2 pages in length
  • Official transcripts from all regionally accredited institutions
  • Three Letters of Recommendations (Freshman excluded)
  • Materials must be received by the deadline date, post marked materials are not considered on time.  Use your application checklist to view when your materials have been received by the Office of Admission.

The 3 references that you list in your application will be sent an email to complete an electronic letter of recommendation on your behalf. Please provide two professional references and one personal that is not a family member.  If your references are experiencing difficulty submitting their letters of recommendation through the application portal, please utilize the blank recommendation form below. Once it is completed it can be scanned to documents@ju.edu to be attached to your application.

Freshman Acceptance Option (Fall): 

This track is open to incoming first time freshman who are about to graduate from high school. Please apply for the Bachelor of Science in Pre-Nursing when completing your application. Some students who have earned dual enrollment credit in high school may already have or be nearing completion of an Associate of Arts degree. 

If you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Freshman Acceptance Option, you will be a Pre-Nursing student until you complete the lower division core curriculum and prerequisites. You will then have the opportunity to apply for direct entry to the Nursing program once nearing completion of your requirements, be aware of the application deadline dates for the traditional program.

Minimum QualificationS:   
  • High School GPA of 3.5 or above
  • B or better in Algebra II, Biology, and Chemistry
  • SAT score of 1100 on old SAT or 1170 on new SAT or ACT score of 24 or higher

Freshman Acceptance Option

Traditional (Fall, Spring): 

This entry is for traditional students who are entering the program with an Associate of Arts Degree from a regionally accredited institution, and have completed the 7 prerequisite requirements. You may apply with the prerequisite courses in progress but they must be completed by the start of the program in order to be eligible for acceptance. Incoming students with an Associate of Science degree from a regionally accredited institution may meet the core curriculum requirements at Jacksonville University.  Students with an Associate of Science degree are required to have 3 credit hours in the following areas: English, Math, Science, and Social Science, eligiblity is determined through the Registrar's Office.  This program takes 28 months to complete and courses are offered in the classroom during they daytime. Please apply as a Nursing major when completing your application and answer the question about the completion of your prerequisites.

Second Degree Seeking (Summer): 

This entry term is for students who have earned a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution and have completed the required prerequisites. The Second Degree Nursing program is accelerated and takes only 16 months to complete. When you submit your application indicate that you are a second degree seeking student and apply as a Nursing major and answer the question about your prerequisite requirements.

MECP and STA-21 Officer Commissioning applicants (Fall 1st 8 week term):  For applicants applying for MECP/STA-21/AECP or a similar commissioning track, Jacksonville University requires that you apply more than a year in advance to your anticipated entry term into the BSN program.  Conventionally, the deadline for packages to be submitted is September of each calendar year.  The Keigwin School of Nursing will review applications and only issue acceptance documentation and degree plans once the full application process (including interview) has been completed and you have been offered admission.  This is to ensure that you can submit the necessary documents required for your officer commissioning package.  Applicants are only able to apply to the Fall entry term to align Jacksonville University's deadlines with your officer commissioning program deadlines.  If you apply to an alternate deadline, we cannot guarantee that you will have the necessary documentation in time to submit with your commissioning package. Conditonal letters of acceptance are not issued under any circumstance and late applications will not be considered.

PREREQUISITES (Need to be completed prior to starting program):

Pre-Nursing (Fall ,Spring, Summer):  This entry point is for ‚Äčstudents who need to work on lower division general education core requirements and or take prerequisite curriculum requirements.  If you would like to take this coursework at Jacksonville University you can apply as a freshman, transfer, or second degree seeking student.  Select your entry term, freshman will select Pre-Nursing as their major. Transfer or Second degree applicants will select Bachelor of Science in Nursing as your major and answer the prerequisite question indicating that you would like to take your core and prerequisites at JU.  Applications are accepted for any entry term available. Please note that the Summer term has very limited general education offerings. Once nearing completion of the core and prerequisite requirements you will apply for direct entry into the Keigwin School of Nursing.  Please note that you also have the option of following the Traditional entry point option.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Desire to complete Jacksonville University's lower division core curriculum and the 7 required prerequisites to become eligible to apply for direct entry to the Nursing program at later date.

RN-BSN Cohort Programs (Fall 1st/2nd 8 week , Spring 1st/2nd 8 week, Summer 1st/2nd 8 week): This entry is for applicants who currently hold a license to practice as a Registered Nurse.  There are course offerings as a satellite program at alternating hospital locations, online program, and courses in the traditional classroom setting.  The satellite program is offered in the evenings and is convenient for students who are working.

  • Active Florida license to practice as a Registered Nurse
  • Current CPR/BCLS Certification
  • Current driver's license or State identification
