Campus Activities

Campus Activities, Organizations and Clubs

General Information

As a JU student, you are more than just someone attending classes, writing papers or working through a lab assignment. Although your academic work is the primary reason for being in college, your participation in non-academic campus activities make the college experience more fulfilling and is equally important.  JU offers a broad range of co-curricular activities, with more than 70 student organizations to suit your interests and talents.  Whether you are someone who likes investigative reporting, planning events, chairing committees or volunteering your time and talent to the community, your involvement in campus activities provides opportunities to develop skills and talents, and prepare you for future professional and civic leadership. These activities also serve as constructive outlets for ideas and energy that complement your classroom learning. JU encourages you to pursue all of the co-curricular activities that interest you; however, your primary purpose for enrolling at JU is the achievement of your academic goals.

Fraternity and Sorority Life - 256-7520
Davis Student Commons, 3rd Floor
Jacksonville University’s fraternity/sorority community is rich in opportunities for leadership, scholarship, social interaction and community service. Women may participate in the “recruitment” or “intake” activities of seven (inter)national sororities: Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Sigma Theta, Gamma Eta, and Gamma Phi Beta. Eight (inter)national fraternities are available to JU men: Delta Chi, Kappa Alpha Psi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) serves as the communications link and governing body for the JU fraternities. The IFC strives to promote healthy growth in the fraternity community and to foster cooperation among fraternities. The Panhellenic Council furthers the ideals of women’s sororities, generates cooperation among women’s organizations and serves as the governing body for JU sororities.  Information about joining a fraternity or sorority can be obtained by contacting the Assistant Director of Campus Activities/ Student Commons.

Interim Student Governance Council - 256-7522
Davis Student Commons, 3rd Floor
In May 2007, the University announced a plan to make the system of student governance one that is truly representative of the student body, and more oriented towards serving fellow students. This plan was implemented due to the organizational challenges experienced by the Student Government Association (SGA) during the Spring 2007 semester.  An "Interim Student Governance Council" was appointed to critically examine student government at the University, and quickly develop a plan for redesigning and reinstating a student governance system.  The Interim Student Governance Council consists of appointed members from major campus organizations.

Intramurals - 256-7537
Davis Student Commons, 3rd Floor
The purpose of the intramural program is to encourage student participation in organized, competitive and non-competitive recreational sports. The Intramural Board is composed of students who coordinate the major sport programs as well as one- and two-day tournaments.

The Naval Reserve Office Training Corps (NROTC) Program at Jacksonville University is designed to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Upon completion of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree, students are commissioned into the Naval Service as active duty U.S. Navy Ensigns or Marine Corps Second Lieutenants, earning competitive salaries with full medical benefits. Newly commissioned officers serve in a wide variety of specialties including Surface Warfare, Submarine Warfare, Naval Aviation, Special Warfare, Special Operations, Nurse Corps and Marine Corps Aviation and Infantry.

There are two ways to participate in the NROTC program: the Scholarship Program and the College Program. The Scholarship Program should be pursued during a student’s senior year in high school or within their first year in college. This program pays for full tuition, fees and offers a monthly stipend of $250-400 based on class standing. College Program students may be nominated during their freshman and sophomore years for a scholarship based on academic achievement and completion of one full semester in the NROTC unit. College Program students do not get a monthly stipend until they are selected for a scholarship. If selected for a scholarship, tuition and fees will also be paid.

Student Media - 256-7520
Jacksonville University has a variety of student media outlets. All groups are staffed by students, advised by faculty and supervised by a Media Board. The Navigator - newspaper, The Riparian - yearbook, The Aquarian literary magazine, the Dolphin Channel, and Dolphin Radio all provide excellent opportunities for real world training.

Clubs/Organizations - 256-7520
To provide even more opportunities outside the classroom, Campus Activities sponsors numerous student clubs; these clubs are very active in campus life and host a variety of events throughout the year. Each Fall, the CAO hosts a Club Fair to showcase the many clubs and organizations available on campus. For information on how to start a new club, please visit the CAO.
