Rock, Paper, Scissors
ENGL 103 – Introductory Writing
MUS 238 – Pop and Rock Music History
Taught by Professors Sarah Murphy and Tony Steve
What does Jimi Hendrix have in common with Stephen King? Who was the target demographic for Eminem’s music? How do the writers for Rolling Stone or Vibe evaluate new CD releases? In what ways is composing a song like writing an essay or a story? What can you learn by studying music and English together? How do “Scissors” fit in with all of this? In these linked courses, we will work together to find and forge connections between “Rock” and
“Paper” by exploring questions like these. Develop critical thinking, rhetorical, and writing skills, particularly the ability to analyze the choices a songwriter or author makes in order to reach and impress a specific audience.
