Applying for Aid

Any student who applies for admission to Jacksonville University may request financial assistance, although all new students must complete the admissions process and be accepted before financial aid awards will be confirmed. Returning students are required to maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined in the University Catalog.

U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens requesting aid should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before March 30 each year. Initial and Renewal FAFSAs should be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. JU's FAFSA code is 001495.

Applicants are urged to submit their applications between January 1 and March 15 to be considered for aid for the fall and spring semesters. Applications received after March 15 will be processed on a "funds available" basis. Summer sessions are considered separately (see below).

Forward a copy of your IRS Form 1040 , a copy of your parents' IRS Form 1040, and untaxed income verification (if any) to the Financial Aid Office only if requested by the Financial Aid Office.

Jacksonville University will develop a financial aid package tailored to your individual needs. We will mail you an award letter that lists types and amounts of aid by semester and in total. You may decline any portion of the financial aid package (such as Parent or Student Loans, or work awards) by contacting your Financial Aid Counselor.

Contact the Financial Aid Office if there is a change in your financial circumstances, or if you have any questions about your aid package.

Students receiving College Work Study are required to sign up and attend student employment training with the Financial Aid Office. Necessary work study paperwork, along with required Federal documents, must be completed at this time. Please have a picture identification and valid Social Security card with you, or your passport.

Perkins Loan and Davin Loan recipients are required to complete the loan application and return it to the Financial Aid Office. New borrowers must attend a pre-loan counseling session. Perkins and Davin Loan promissory notes and truth-in-lending statements must be signed at the Controller's Office before funds can be released.

If you are a student borrowing your first Federal Stafford Loan at JU, please return a completed Master Promissory Note (MPN) to the Financial Aid Office. New Federal Stafford Loan borrowers are required, by federal regulation, to complete a pre-loan counseling session. All borrowers must also attend an exit interview prior to leaving the University. (Click here to complete your Stafford Loan Entrance or Exit Counseling on-line.)

You can complete and sign the Master Promissory Note on-line by clicking here to access the list of preferred lenders.

Funds are sent to Jacksonville University at the beginning of the term they are intended for and are issued each semester. The funds for the first time borrowers may not be released until 30 days after the semester begins. One-semester loans are delivered in two payments with the second payment delivered no earlier than mid-term.

Parents of the dependent students may apply for a Federal PLUS (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students) loan. Parents of all income levels are eligible; however, there is a credit worthiness evaluation conducted by the lender before the loan is approved. (Click here to complete a PLUS Pre-Approval Process and Master Promissory Note on-line.) Parents may apply for the entire cost of attendance at JU minus any financial aid the student receives.

Investigate all possibilities for local and state scholarships, and complete separate applications as required. Notify the Financial Aid Office of any outside awards, regardless of the source or amount.

Private (Alternative) Loans are meant to help students cover education costs not met by other forms of financial aid. Click here for more information about Private/Alternative Loans.

Summer financial aid is calculated differently from the rest of the school year. Usually, federal, state or institutional funding is not available for summer school. As soon as you know which classes you plan to take, contact the Financial Aid Office. You will be asked to complete a form requesting summer aid (The form can be found on this website under "Forms" option.) The number of classes you take and the summer sessions you plan to attend will determine your loan eligibility. Your counselor will determine whether you have Stafford Loan eligibility remaining for the summer. If you have already used your Stafford Loan eligibility for the year, your counselor can discuss with you alternative loan options.
