Student Commons

The Davis Student Commons officially opened its newly renovated doors on October 30, 2006. Serving as a “student life center” for the campus, the facility has space solely dedicated for student use, including student activities and organizations. Major groups who are housed on the 3rd floor include the Student Government Association, JU 108 (the campus radio station), Dolphin Productions, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Intramural Sports, and Orientation. These groups share the 3rd floor with the offices of Student Life, Campus Activities, and Career Services.
The Student Commons also houses the state of the art Billie Nimnicht Jr. Fitness Center, the Buccaneer Game Room, two lounges (one linked up with high speed internet), and multiple meeting rooms (including the Carolyn Munroe Wilson Conference Room and Thomas and Usen Auditoriums). Nellie’s Grill is still under construction and is scheduled to open Fall 2007.
Highlighted in the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) annual Renovation and Construction Showcase, the Davis Student Commons is a beautiful addition to the Jacksonville University campus. At almost 34,000 square feet of student-friendly space, JU students have their first on-campus “student life center.”

Project Background
The building that formerly housed the Davis College of Business has been transformed into Jacksonville University’s first student union and functions as a true center of student life for the campus. The designation for the new Davis Student Commons was directed and endowed by the Davis Family.
Transitioning the building from its former state to the Student Commons was a substantial project, requiring significant renovations and reconfigurations to the facility. To aid in the planning process for this transition, an advisory committee of students, faculty members, and staff representatives was assembled in late Spring 2004. Throughout the Fall 2004 semester, the committee gathered input from the campus community, through various mediums, on the future use of this facility. A final report on the recommendations for this facility was issued to President Kerry Romesburg in late December 2004.
The University contracted with Reynolds, Smith, and Hills architects for the design and planning of the Commons renovation and Dav-Lin Interior Contractors of Jacksonville served as the General Contractor for the renovation of the building. Construction officially began on August 23, 2005 and the final renovations are set to be complete Fall 2007.
