Sri Lankan pianist Harsha Abeyaratne returns to Jacksonville University for an all-Chopin recital including the famous “Funeral March” Sonata (Sonata in B-flat minor).


OCTOBER

Intercollegiate Choral Festival
October 8 @ 7:30 pm, Lazzara Concert Hall, University of North Florida

The 15th Annual Intercollegiate Choral Festival will host the choirs of Florida State College, Jacksonville University and UNF to kick off the collegiate choral season.

Clarinets in Residence *
October 10 @ 4:00 pm, Terry Concert Hall

Chamber music for clarinet quartet and piano featuring the Jacksonville Symphony clarinet section. The program will conclude with a performance by the Jacksonville Clarinet Choir.

First Coast Wind Ensemble

This sixty-member group of Jacksonville University students and community musicians perform masterworks from the wind repertoire.

John Ricci in Concert *
October 16 @ 7:30 pm, Terry Concert Hall

Artist in Residence and winner of the Independent Music Awards, saxophonist John Ricci will perform arrangements by famous jazz composers. He will also perform some of his own original pieces, accompanied by some of the best jazz performers in the region.

The Apple Tree *

The Apple Tree is a series of three musical playlets with each act having its own storyline, but all three are tied together by a common theme (someone who believes that they want something, but once they get what they wanted they realize that it wasn’t what they wanted). The first act is based on Mark Twain’s The Diary of Adam and Eve; the second act is based on Frank R. Stockton’s The Lady or the Tiger? ; the third act is based on Jules Feiffer’s Passionella.

Orchestra Concert
October 26 @ 7:30 pm, Terry Concert Hall

The Jacksonville University Orchestra, under conductor Marguerite Richardson, joins in the celebration of Frederic Chopin’s 200th birthday with a performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1, played by Assistant Professor of Piano, Scott Watkins.

War of the Worlds *
October 31 @ 7:30 pm, Terry Concert Hall

“Ladies and Gentlemen, we interrupt our program …” In 1938 Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater on the Air caused America to panic with news reports of a Martian invasion. JU’s College of Fine Arts teams up to recreate the famous CBS radio broadcast, live on stage with an orchestra playing Bernard Hermann’s original music and live sound effects. Robert Tudor stars as Professor Richard Pierson, the character Welles created


NOVEMBER

Percussion Ensemble Concert
November 6 @ 7:30 pm, Terry Concert Hall

JU Percussion performs John Cage’s lost radio play: The City Wears A Slouch Hat. The script sketches a surreal story on a man named ‘The Voice’ who wanders around a big city, meeting various characters and circumstances.  Also on the program will be pieces for marimba ensemble on how the marimba has slipped into popular culture.

Schumann Concert *
November 9 @ 7:30 pm, Terry Concert Hall

Music by Romantic composer Robert Schumann, with performances by Bobb Robinson, Kimberly Beasley, Marguerite Richardson, and Scott Watkins. Violin Sonata in A minor, Dichterliebe and Frauenliebe und Leben are featured in this program commemorating the iconic composer’s 200th birthday.

A, My Name is Alice *
November 10, 12 (8:00 pm), 13 @ 7:30 pm, Fine Arts Hall

The revue written by many hands and performed by five fizzy song-and- dance women. The subject of ‘’Alice’’ is also women - but the show’s feminism is worn lightly. If anything, women are as likely to be satirical targets as men. Annual Juried Student Exhibition

Jazz in the Black Box

Come be a part of what has now become a growing tradition - an intimate nightclub experience. The event will celebrate the ultimate art of musical communication by small chamber jazz groups, featuring student & faculty jazz ensembles.

Mazurka
November 19 @ 7:30 pm, Terry Concert Hall

Chopin’s life, told through biographies and letters of the composer’s closest friends, including Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann, Julian Fontana, and George Sand, and underscored by Chopin’s most personal music, his Mazurkas. Written and performed by students from JU’s piano studio.

Orchestra Concert

The JU Orchestra continues its holiday tradition with a concert of seasonal selections of classical music and lighter fare.

Scoring Music for Film *
December 5 @ 3 pm, Terry Concert Hall

Short films scored by student composers will be used to demonstrate techniques for creating music in different genres: science fiction, action/adventure/thrillers, musicals, and comedy/romance films. Dr. Vincent and the students will provide additional commentary on philosophy, emotional tone, psychological implications, and special techniques in writing film scoring cues.

Christmas Choral Concert

The Annual Christmas Concert features a candlelight processional and recessional, carols, motets, anthems and songs of the Christmas season. One of the most popular events on the calendar featuring the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers.

This concert will feature works by Jian-jun He, Thomas Harrison and Tony Steve, as well as other composers on the faculty at JU and invited guest composers.

The American Chamber Trio *

The American Chamber Trio featuring Daniel Morganstern, cello, Eric Larsen, piano, and June DeForest, violin, are acclaimed by The New York Times as “sensitive and persuasive artists” and have appeared nationally and internationally for over two decades.

Private Schools Honor Band Concert

This annual young artist program features the best instrumentalists from seven area private schools: Bishop Kenny, Bolles, Episcopal, First Coast Christian, Providence, Trinity Christian, and University Christian.

The Vampyr: A Soap Opera *

Based on Dr. John Pollidori’s story “The Vampyre” (written in tandem with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein), Heinrich Marschner’s 1829 opera Der Vampyr rode the crest of the Gothic wave that lasted to the end of the 19th century, and established the conventions of vampiric lore that influenced everyone from Bram Stoker to Twilight.
