Ensembles

Jacksonville University's Concert Choir has close to sixty voices and frequently performs larger choral works. Works which the Concert Choir has performed include Poulenc’s Glorida, Handel’s Messiah, the Requiems of Brahms, Cherubini, Mozart and John Rutter, Schubert’s Mass in B flat, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Brubeck’s Light in the Wilderness, William Schirmer’s Missa Universalis, Delius’ Sea Drift and Songs of Farewell.

In 1987 the Concert Choir did a tour to New York City and performed Te Deums by Bruckner, Berlioz, and Walton in the Mid America Choral Festival in Avery Fisher Hall. In April of 2007 the Concert Choir sang Mahler’s 2nd Symphony with the Jacksonville Symphony Chorus and Orchestra.

The Jacksonville University Concert Choir, open to any student by audition, performs in the annual Intercollegiate Choir Festival in Jacksonville, and the Christmas and Spring Concerts at Jacksonville University.


The Jacksonville University Chamber Singers is a group of talented singers selected by audition who perform the finest choral literature from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries with an emphasis on chamber works, such as madrigals and part songs.  Approximately 90% of the group  are music majors. The group rehearses two days a week for an hour and fifteen minutes each day.

Under the direction of Dr. Jon O. Carlson, the Chamber Singers have performed for the American Choral Directors Association, Florida Baptist Convention, Beaches Fine Arts Series, Christ Church Frederica Artist Series on St. Simons Island, Penny Farms Artist Series in Penny Farms, Cypress Village Artist Series, Florida, Florida Music Educators National Conference, Florida State Music Teachers, toured England and performed at Canterbury Cathedral, with Barry Manilow, on WAWS TV, WJXT TV, Continental Cablevision, as well as throughout the Northeast Florida region.  Recently they have sung major choral works with the Jacksonville Symhony Orchestra and Chorus including Vaughn Williams’ Sea Symphony and Verdi’s Requiem.

The tenors and basses, and sopranos and altos of the JU Concert Choir will unite, forming the Men's and Women's Choruses to explore interesting literature for treble chorus that they perform in the various concerts throughout the year.


Active chapters of Pi Kappa Lambda national honorary society in music, Mu Phi Epsilon, the Music Entertainment Industry Students Association, and the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference have been established on campus. The MEISA chapter helps coordinate activities for the JU based record label, Dolphinium Records.  Music students regularly perform in a variety of musical organizations and in recital formats required by their curricula. Numerous ensembles with regular rehearsals and performances provide experience for all JU students. Association with these organizations may require an audition.

  • Wind Ensemble - specializing in traditional and contemporary wind repertoire, frequently performing with the First Coast Wind Ensemble
  • Jazz Ensemble - specializing in swing, standard and contemporary jazz
  • Percussion Ensemble - specializing in traditional and contemporary percussion repertoire
  • Chamber Ensembles - specializing in literature for smaller vocal and instrumental ensembles in both classical and jazz idioms

Scholarships

Jacksonville University offers competitive talent scholarships in all areas.  Full-tuition music scholarships are available for positions in our Honors Brass and Woodwind Quintets, and Honors String Quartet (subject to position vacancy).
