Marine Science is the interdisciplinary study of the oceans, estuaries and inland seas of the world. The major at Jacksonville University emphasizes the multi-disciplined approach necessary to understand the marine environment. Using a core of biology courses, the major includes elements of chemistry, physics and physical science, as well as life sciences. Students may focus their studies in one or more of these areas by careful selection of their elective courses.
We encourage students to gain valuable hands-on experience through internships and research with the faculty. Students who wish to participate in undergraduate research may do so by registering for Research Participation or Independent Study courses with particular faculty members. In addition, some students work closely with faculty as laboratory assistants. This experience is particularly helpful for students who wish to teach. Marine science prepares majors for both employment in both the public and private sectors and for post-baccalaureate study at graduate or professional schools.

Vision/Mission Statements
Our vision is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to become responsible, informed and productive world citizens.
The mission of the Terry Parker High School Academy of Coastal and Environmental Sciences is dedicated to the task of equipping high school students with the k knowledge and understanding for leadership in a new, more environmentally responsible era, and with academic and filed skills which will open doors into a growing filed of environmental careers
Program Overview
If you are interested in the environment and working outdoors, the Academy of Coastal and Environmental Sciences
(ACES) is for YOU!
Field and lab activities in the surrounding river and salt marsh ecosystems will be a major part of this academy. Activities are geared to meet the needs of preparing students for learning the fundamentals of scientific field research.
Students should be ready to get a little wet and muddy! With the assistance of
research scientists at Jacksonville University, students will be helping to develop projects such as wetlands restoration and artificial reefs.
Types of classes that are offered to students enrolled in the ACES program are:
- Marine Science I and II
- Marine Science I and II Honors
- Advanced Placement Environmental Science (APES)
- Zoology
- Intro. To Environmental Technology 1 & 2
- Water Quality Resources 3 & 4
Academy Partnership
In partnership with Jacksonville University, the academy program is partnered with select faculty and students from JU, who will implement and develop multi-year projects culminating in a potential senior Capstone Project presentation.
Program Goals
- To provide students with extensive opportunity for field-based research in Northeast Florida.
- To provide special t raining in the environmental sciences: ecology, earth science, marine biology, water resources and conservation management, as well as a host of other environmentally related sciences.
- To develop career skills through practical experience, internships and independent study.
- To encourage the character traits of self-discipline, self-motivation, resourcefulness and bioenvironmental ethics.
- To equip students with the knowledge and skills to become responsible, knowledgeable and productive world citizens.
