JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University Board of Trustees have extended the contract of Dr. Kerry D. Romesburg, the University’s president for the past three and a half years. The new contract extends the commitment through 2012.

“Dr. Romesburg came to JU at a crucial time in the institution’s history,” said Mike Shad, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “Under his leadership, the University has a strong financial base once again, he has reestablished goodwill in the community, and he leads a results-focused team. The board is pleased with his efforts and trust that he will continue to improve the institution.”

A Romesburg led transformation of campus is most noticeable in a new 500-bed student residence hall and the Negaard Rowing Center. Both are top-notch facilities built to enhance the students' experience. Additionally, the Davis Students Commons opened along with a newly renovated Swisher Theater this past year. Plans are currently in the works for additional facility improvements and a campus-wide wireless network.

Academically, the institution continues to thrive. U.S.News & World Report currently ranks JU in the top tier of Masters Universities in the South. Programs such as nursing, aviation, glass blowing, marine science and others are recognized nationally for their excellence. JU has recently earned approval for a new 5-year education program with students earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. Additionally, plans for the Marine Science Research Institute have been announced and fundraising for a new facility is underway. Construction is expected to commence in 2008.

As a private university, JU relies on tuition revenue and private giving to operate. Enrollment at JU is on the rise with the 2007 freshman class being the largest in the school’s history. Enrollment in the evening and graduate programs are also at their highest levels ever. Indicators for private giving are also showing positive signs. More donors are giving larger sums of monies to the institution on a regular basis. The Board of Trustees annually gives more than a million dollars to support the university’s mission.

“I am honored by the confidence the Board has placed in me,” said Romesburg. “There is much positive momentum at Jacksonville University and it is my pleasure to help provide the best possible education for our students.”
