JU Reaches Record Enrollment Numbers
09/13/07
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University set new enrollment records as students arrived on campus for the fall semester. This year's freshman class of 580 brings total enrollment to a new high of 3,436.
There have been increases in every category, with adult enrollment going up 35 percent and graduate students rising by 15 percent. The total number of new students adds up to 1,299 for an increase of 32 percent.
JU's senior vice president for enrollment, Miriam King, attributed the success to several initiatives the school began this year aimed at boosting enrollment and retention while providing better service to students.
"Jacksonville University is a tremendously attractive option for students,” King said. “It is just the right size to deliver the very best educational experience, and our targeted scholarship programs make the quality of a private university affordable."
Officials credit several new recruitment and retention initiatives for the healthy numbers. JU established a unique program giving students who desire a college education, but who may have not performed to their full potential in high school, a chance to prove themselves while developing the tools they’ll need to succeed. The Riverside School is an intensive six-week summer bridge program that started its inaugural class this summer.
Another exciting program – the Freshmen Interest Network (FIN) – was developed to allow students to discover how various majors relate to the real world. Courses such as S3-Sand, Surf and Slopes and The Science of Crime Novels give students a thought provoking and in-depth way to explore their interests using case studies, inquiry and real-life application. Students discover first-hand how their majors relate to the real world by taking linked courses in marine science, literature, physics, politics, economics, mathematics, chemistry and history.
“These are very strong numbers and more great news for Jacksonville University,” said President Kerry Romesburg. “We’re glad that so many freshman and transfer students are choosing JU, and that our continuing students are remaining committed to their educational goals. We’re working very hard to make JU an attractive choice for all of our students.”
