JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University has created a unique program giving students who desire a college education, but who may have not performed to their full potential in high school, a chance to prove themselves while developing the tools they’ll need to succeed. The Riverside School is an intensive six-week summer bridge program that started its inaugural class on Monday, July 7.
According to several national studies, students who participate in these types of programs are more likely to matriculate in college as well as have higher retention rates in the second year of college. “Riverside School at Jacksonville University is a distinctive educational program that gives students the courses and experiences they need to succeed in college,” said Dr. Lois Becker, senior vice president for academic affairs at JU. “It offers a pathway to a successful college career with a unique blend of academic and social experiences.”
With the original goal of starting the school with 28 students, JU has found a need for this type of program and exceeded the goal by enrolling 33 students in the inaugural class. “We knew that these students deserved a chance to reach their potential and we’re happy to provide that opportunity for so many,” said Becker.
Students live and learn on campus with a cohort of students for a six-week summer session. During their time in the Riverside School, they will complete college-level preparatory courses in English and math along with a course about adapting to life in college. The students also participate in programs intended to strengthen their educational foundation including skills development and academic program management.
“This program is designed to promote academic integration, social integration and decision-making,” said Becker. “There are students who have potential that they haven’t realized; this program can help them reach it.”
The Riverside School program goes beyond academics – students also participate in team building activities such as daytrips to Universal Studios, community service, and daytrips to the beach. Student peer mentors are on hand to facilitate student success. Faculty and academic success coaches are also available daily.
“The foundations for success are woven into both the curriculum and co-curricular activities,” said Tasha Green, director of the Riverside School. “Students have free tutoring services, daily mentoring and required study halls along with the group outings. The school is unique and the experiences that students will have in the program go far beyond the traditional college experience.”
Students who complete this program successfully will earn college credits and be offered regular admission to the University for the fall semester. Scholarship or grant eligibility at JU will also be evaluated based on performance in the program.
The program began July 7 and will run through August 17.
