Position Description

Captain (USCG licensed Master 100-ton or higher)

The Captain is in charge of the JU MSRI vessel Larkin. It is his/her duty to manage the vessel in such a manner as to ensure the safety and wellbeing of faculty, students, guests and crew, and to conduct ship’s affairs in accordance with established Jacksonville University and Marine Science Research Institute policies and direction from the Executive Director of the MSRI and/or the Boat Operations Manager. The university relies on the Captain to set a high standard of personal and professional conduct, and to maintain shipboard morale and respect for JU MSRI’s purpose and mission.

 
 

 

Requirements

Primary Responsibilities:

· Become fully familiar with the handling characteristics of the vessel (maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids, steering, safety apparatus, etc.)
· Maintain required logbooks according to established practice and in established formats
· Update and display all necessary licenses as required by the United States Coast Guard and other state and federal regulatory agencies
· Oversee all crew, faculty and students and ensure that each understands and performs his/her assigned duties adequately
· Conduct emergency drills. Written drill reports will be logged
· Assist in repair and maintenance of all small boats/vessels used by MSRI

 

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
 

 

· US Citizen, US National or Green Card holder
· Five years of experience working aboard or operating small boats

 

· USCG license with a minimum rating of Master 100-ton

 

· Must pass pre-employment drug screen, reference checks and background check

 

 
 

 

Desired Skills/Abilities:
· Outgoing and friendly demeanor, able to engage and communicate easily with faculty, students and other guests

 

· Familiarity with St. Johns River and the Jacksonville area weather conditions
