Position Description

Jacksonville University is a premier, small, private university with an enrollment of 3,500 students on a riverfront campus in Jacksonville, Florida. The Division of Student Life is seeking a dynamic professional committed to our mission of building a student-centered learning community.  The Division is responsible for programs, services, and initiatives that support the academic mission of the University, promote retention and student satisfaction, and provide students with opportunities for life experiences and personal development.




General Responsibilities:


  • Provide the overall administration of traditional residence hall complexes and the residential apartment village
  • Provide facility management and budgetary oversight for Residential Life
  • Provide leadership in the continuous development and assessment of comprehensive student life programs, which support the University's mission, vision and strategic goals
  • Supervise professional staff and student employees
  • Assist with the development and application of department operational guidelines, policies and procedures, including overall responsibility for the department budget
  • Adjudicate student conduct hearings
  • Assist with the recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating and retaining department staff members
  • Knowledge of current developments/trends, as well as best practices, in residential life, student involvement and leadership, fraternity and sorority life, disability support services, international student services, leadership development programs and or new student orientation
  • Respond in a positive and collaborative manner, to needs and concerns of students, parents and other relevant stakeholders; and
  • Evening and weekend responsibilities, as well as other relevant duties assigned by the Dean of Students
  • This position requires the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life to reside on campus, with utilities and parking provided.

 Special Skills:

  • Ability to use discretionary judgment;
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Datatel;
  • Excellent problem solving abilities;
  • Excellent leadership and time management skills;
  • Experience working with StarRez computer software;
  • Ability to lead a professional team through role modeling and performance;
  • Ability to effectively relate with students, parents, faculty, administration and staff

Work Conditions:

  • Work is primarily indoors but requires the incumbent to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings and while off campus;
  • Standard office hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM;
  • Attendance at evening and weekend events is required;
  • Off campus, local, state and regional travel is required;

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds;
  • Must be able to bend, stoop and reach;
  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a key board and other business machines;
  • Near vision sufficient to read written communications and computer display screens;
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone

Prerequisites Required for Position:



1. Minimum Education Requirement: Master’s degree in higher education/student affairs or related field


2. Minimum Work Experience: At least 3 years of progressively responsible, full-time professional experience;
3. Preferred Qualifications:
  •  High level of comfort with frequent student contact, and being accessible outside of traditional office hours;
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and the ability to advise diverse student groups;
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully balance, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks in an active, fast-paced environment, while providing superior constituent service;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented, student-centered environment; and
  • Excellent oral, written, computer, problem-solving, critical thinking, and fiscal management skills
