Dr Carlson directs the choral ensembles, teaches choral literature, voice and music history. He is also director of music of Southside United Methodist Church.
Dr. Carlson was appointed director of the Jacksonville Symphony Chorus in 2001. Recent highlights of Dr. Carlson leading the JSO Chorus include Puccini’s La Boheme, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Bizet’s Carmen, Haydn’s The Creation, Verdi’s Requiem and Four Sacred Pieces, and Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Orff’s Carmina Burana.
Former his also the former director of the Butler (Pennsylvania) Symphony Chorus, Evansville (Indiana) Philharmonic Chorus and conducted the Anchorage (Alaska) Community Chorus.
From 1991 through 2001 Dr. Carlson was chair of Jacksonville University’s Division of Music.
He has sung and recorded with choirs directed by Eugene Ormandy (Philadelphia Orchestra), Leonard Bernstein (New York Philharmonic) and Joseph Krips; and studied conducting with Warren Martin, Nicolas Harshanyi, Harold Decker and Helmuth Rilling.
Under his direction, choral ensembles from Jacksonville University performed for a wide variety of audiences, including the American Choral Directors Association, the Florida Music Educators National Conference and on the USS Forrestal at Mayport Naval Station.
Frequently in demand as a clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Carlson has judged for the Florida Vocal Association Regional and State Festivals, American Guild of Organists, Florida Baptist Music Association, Heritage Music Festivals and Events America Music Festivals.
