Internship & Career Opportunities

Internships in research labs, museums and industry are available on a competitive basis. A file of such opportunities is maintained in the Division of Science and Mathematics office.

A chemistry major can lead to careers in medicine, medical research, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, pharmaceuticals, molecular biology, optometry, physical therapy, chemical engineering, forensics, toxicology, environmental science, materials science, science journalism, art restoration, patent law and public policy. In addition, there are the traditional chemistry careers in teaching, research, consulting and the various aspects of the chemical industry: polymers, plastics, petroleum, detergents, pulp and paper, paints, dyes, cosmetics, perfumes and food additives.

Chemistry also is an excellent major for students planning to apply to professional schools in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy. About one quarter of JU's chemistry graduates enter graduate schools, where they specialize in areas as diverse as molecular physics and neuroscience, as well as the more conventional fields of chemistry.
