New Student Orientation

To Survive Freshman Year

College Tips

§      Be sure to respond and communicate with your group leaders as soon and as much as possible because they are a very reliable source of information. These students have been through this before and can help you.

§      Make sure you save up money for emergencies.

§      Make sure you contact your roommate/suite mates prior to coming to school in the fall. This is so you can get to know each other a little better before living together, and also you can work out who will be bringing different items for your living space. (i.e. mini-fridge, microwave, rugs, etc.)

§      GET INVOLVED!!!  It’s the best way to meet people!

§      The best thing to know about college is that you are there for you.  Only you can make your dreams come true, and only you can pass your classes.  Make sure you take care of yourself before you take care of any one else.

§      Don't be afraid to start a conversation with someone you don't know. That is the only way to meet new people. JU is a small, close- knit school, so it is not hard to get to know a lot of friendly people!

§      At first, you'll be delighted with a shorter school day, and seemingly less homework. However, KEEP UP WITH YOUR CLASS READINGS! If you put it off, not only will there be far too much to do the night or two before your test, but you will likely get too backed up to fully recover; it can happen very quickly, and most of us have been there. You'll be way ahead of the game if you're diligent about your reading from the start.

FAQs

Q:   How is the food at JU?

A:    The food at JU is actually pretty good.  I always am able to find a good selection depending what time of the day it is. The best advice is to get a Deluxe Meal plan and use all of the different locations that JU is able to provide.  My favorite part is that if I have any ideas regarding food I just go to the person in charge of the food choices, aka Arty, and give him my ideas.

Q:   How do I get into Oak Hall? How long do I have to wait before I can get into Oak Hall?

A: You must wait until the end of the first semester and that is when housing will notify students of available rooms for the second semester.

Q:   Is it easy to make friends??

A:    It is very easy to make friends, and the best thing is that you can choose who you want to associate yourself with.  An easy way of getting close with people right away is joining Greek life, or an academic club.
