Sociology

Looking for a flexible major? One that leads to a variety of career options? Or do just want answers to some tough questions: For example, why is the divorce rate so high? What determines a society of haves and have-nots? How can we survive information overload? Welcome to sociology—the study of human relationships and one of the most flexible majors at Jacksonville University. You customize your program of study to what interests you most. Be prepared to learn more about yourself, the community and the world at large. The major is fascinating and all encompassing—in sociology, no stone is left unturned!

In small, intimate classes, you can delve into a myriad of issues including inequality, race and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, social change, globalization, deviance, conflict, religion and cults, social movements, and more. You’ll examine relationships between society and the institutions of education, economy, family, medicine, law, and criminal justice. Discussions aren’t merely interesting—they’re compelling, relevant and empowering.

The solid foundation you gain from basic theory, research methods, and analyzing data will prepare you for graduate school or a variety of occupations in public relations, education, government, social agencies as well as for careers in counseling, law, medicine, the ministry, politics, or public administration.
