Marine Science
Program Description
Marine science is the interdisciplinary study of the oceans, estuaries and inland seas of the world. The major at Jacksonville University emphasizes the multi-disciplined approach necessary to understand the marine environment. Using a core of biology courses, the major includes elements of chemistry, physics and physical science, as well as life sciences. Students may focus their studies in one or more of these areas by careful selection of their elective courses.
We encourage students to gain valuable hands-on experience through internships and research with the faculty. Students who wish to participate in undergraduate research may do so by registering for Research Participation or Independent Study courses with particular faculty members. In addition, some students work closely with faculty as laboratory assistants. This experience is particularly helpful for students who wish to teach. Marine science prepares majors for both employment in both the public and private sectors and for post-baccalaureate study at graduate or professional schools.
