Marine Science

Internship & Career Opportunities

Internships at marine research labs, aquaria and museums are available on a competitive basis.

Job opportunities in marine science include positions at museums working as curators of marine-oriented collections and as exhibit coordinators. The majority of jobs currently appears to be in private consulting. Individuals with marine science backgrounds are trained in field techniques that enable them to sample water and wetlands to determine environmental impacts. Our students have also found employment at public aquaria working with fish breeding and maintenance programs, at marine parks as animal trainers and in education departments. Some of their employers include Sea World, Naval Oceanographic Office, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Division of Parks and Recreation, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, and Florida Marine Research Institute.

Many students pursue graduate degrees in marine science or a related field; e.g., public health, environmental science and biology. Students who want to pursue graduate study should take advantage of opportunities to do undergraduate research and assist in labs.
