In addition to "The Modern World," the core history course required of all JU students, history majors take "Western Civilization to the 18th Century" as well as a two-term survey of U.S. history. They are also required to complete "The Technique of History," a course that introduces students to historical research, analysis, and writing. Beyond these specific course requirements, majors select 21 hours in history electives. The JU history department specializes in U.S., European, Caribbean, and Latin American history. Majors may complete some of their required hours through internships and independent studies.

The history department faculty takes pride in sponsoring students in independent study projects. Consequently, history majors often present their work at the National Council for Undergraduate Research and the Florida Conference of Historians. Those planning to attend graduate school are encouraged to pursue a senior thesis for departmental honors. The history faculty encourage their students to participate in public history internships at institutions such as the Museum of Science and History, the Jacksonville Historical Society, Old Arlington, Inc., and the Fort Caroline National Monument. Teacher education students complete an internship in the local school system. Jacksonville University's history majors frequently study abroad.
