Internship & Career Opportunities

Our students participate in a variety of internships including economic and community development for the City of Jacksonville; field GPS and GIS activities for Angus and Associates; research and writing for National Geographic Magazine; mapping, data analysis and research for the U.S. Census Bureau; GIS for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s office; Blue Cross-Blue Shield, local newspapers and television stations, and more. Because GIS tools are used by geographers, planners, land developers, real estate agents, utility companies and municipal officials, the demand for GIS specialists is increasing. Geography majors have gone on to successful careers with employers that  include Aerotek, Incorporated; Fidelity Title & Guaranty; Wachovia Corporation; U.S. Defense Mapping Agency; Las Vegas (Nev.) Planning Commission; Georgia Department of Natural Resources; U.S. Navy; and the U.S. Marine Corps.

Approximately 20 percent of our majors are in ROTC and accept U.S. military commissions upon graduation. An additional 20 percent pursue graduate degrees in geography.
