Aeronautics

Aeronautics students receive hands-on, field-specific advice for internships and career planning from dedicated aeronautics staff. Through seminars and other offerings, program staff update students on the state of hiring in the aviation industry, provide them with advice on writing resumes and self-marketing techniques, and teach them how to plan for long-term career goals in aviation.

Aviation management students often intern in airline operations, airport management, airport business operations, aviation law, and FAA flight training operations. Past internship program sponsors have included American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Delta Connection Academy, Northwest Airlines, USAirways, Jacksonville Port Authority, Denver International Airport, Paine/Boeing Field, and NASA Aviation/Space Camp.

After flight training students complete the flight training program, they may qualify for positions as paid flight instructors and have the opportunity to log up to 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time. After completing the phase as instructors, JU graduates are guaranteed a job interview with a regional carrier. About 97 percent of JU graduates qualified as flight instructors have been hired as pilots. In addition, students may complete the Airlines Training Orientation Program (ATOP), an introductory airline training course, at Continental Training Center in Houston, Texas. ATOP utilizes Boeing 737 systems, cockpit procedure training, and full-motion simulation flights.

JU aviation graduates have gone on to successful careers with commercial air carriers and other aviation-related agencies. Some of their employers include COMAIR Airlines, Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, Delta Airlines, Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Express, Florida Gulf/Mesa Airlines, Jacksonville Port Authority, Naval Air Systems Command, Northrop Grumman, Philadelphia Port Authority, United Airlines, USAirways, the U.S. Navy, and many other airlines.
