Peer Mentor Experience:

Being a Peer Mentor has been a very positive experience in many ways, one of my favorite things is that I get to be creative. You can put all of your creative thoughts in your work when you plan your own H.U.M.P. programs and there are no limits of how creative you get to be. I enjoy the connection you get with the other Peer Mentors and Community Advisors, but mostly I like the connection and unity that you create with your residents, it is very heartwarming and you get memories and friends for life. Being a Peer Mentor creates opportunities for you to grow not only as a person but as a leader; you will deal with many situations which you will make use of in real life.

Advantages of Joining Residential Life:

The best part of being a member of the residential life staff has been being able to help change the way that the campus is for all residents.  As a member of the residential life staff I am able to help make changes that make the community that all residents, including myself, live in better.  Residential life is a department in which students become leaders and are given a chance to have their voices heard and they can really make a difference.

My Experience:

I always knew that I was the kind of person that would make a good community advisor or peer mentor, but I had no idea just how rewarding it would be. Through my experiences as a community advisor I have made friends, made an impact, and learned some things about myself. My residents ended up helping me just as much as I was there to help them and I have found myself on a journey that can only help me once I graduate and enter the “real world”. The college experience is all about learning and discovery and being a community advisor has allowed me to take that even further.

Benefits of the Job:

I knew that being a CA/PM would open up opportunities for me and give me a unique learning experience. The extent to which this would be true however, I had no idea. Most people see the job of a CA/PM as rule enforcer. That however, is not the case. There are a variety of aspects to this job. For me, the best part is the close interaction it provides with other CA/PM and the Residential Life staff. I love being involved in the lives of residents and being able to help answer their questions, address any problems and concerns.

Another aspect of being a CA/PM is the life skills that the job teaches. I have learned to manage time better, work with Residential Life staff, help resolve conflict, build a community and organize programs and activities. Most of all, it is a fun job through which I have met amazing people and learned valuable lessons that I will cherish for a long time to come.
