Position Description
Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences supervises, Division Chairs, School Deans, Directors, and College Administrative Associates.
Responsibilities
Chief academic administrator for the College of Arts and Sciences, consisting of 6 units: School of Education, School of Nursing, Division of Humanities, Division of Science and Mathematics, Division of Social Sciences, N.R.O.T.C. Program, and Dental School of Orthodontics
Periodic Responsibilities
- Support the mission and vision of the community.
- Prepare and implement long and short-range strategic plans for the College.
- Prepare Annual Reports for the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Supervise Division Chairs, Directors, and Deans of Schools of the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Supervise Dean's Administrative Associates.
- Establish and interpret policies pertaining to the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Interpret and implement policies and procedures established by the University - as these policies and procedures apply to the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Initiate budget recommendations for the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Review, modify if necessary, and approve Division budget requests and authorizations. Manage budget for Dean's Office.
- Review, evaluate, and make recommendations on Division Chairs' recommendations on faculty salaries, promotions, pre-tenure, tenure, and post-tenure. Evaluate and make recommendations on Division Chairs.
- Encourage and facilitate faculty development.
- Make recommendations on new faculty needed, and supervise faculty recruitment process and make recommendations on new faculty to be hired.
- Submit advertisement for requesting new faculty for all divisions.
- Ensure that the Departments, Divisions and College develop and implement plans on assessment.
- Seek financial support for the College through grant applications and fund raising in cooperation with the Institutional Advancement.
- Entertain student and faculty appeals on academic matters.
- Encourage and initiate Division and College programs to foster academic excellence and extracurricular academic programs.
- Represent College of Arts and Sciences on committees.
- Represent College of Arts and Sciences at University functions.
- Represent College of Arts and Sciences in the community.
- Maintain currency in academic discipline.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education Experience required to perform job
Terminal degree in an academic discipline within the purview of disciplines found in Arts and Sciences; administrative experience; familiarity with the budgetary process; evidence of scholarly interests; and a strong commitment to academic excellence in a private, non-profit University setting.
