The First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce awards "Achieving the Dream" scholarships annually to eligible Hispanic students from northeast Florida.   The number and value of scholarships varies from year to year. In 2009, eight $2,000 scholarships were awarded by the FCHCC.  "Achieving the Dream" Scholarship Requirements:
o Full-time undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution
o Minimum GPA of 3.0
o No more than a third-generation Hispanic descendant
o Established home residency in Florida First Coast region: Duval, St. Johns, Clay, Baker or Nassau Counties, for at least three (3) years prior to the award date of the scholarship
o Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident

AES Engineering Solutions offers a $500 scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by  the essays that are submitted.Scholarships are intended for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields of study. This award is available to all students attending a post secondary educational facility.  You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.  Deadline for entry: October 8, 2010.  Application Process:  Students will submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on the scholarship page of our web site   http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm

Jacksonville University's Newest Scholarships

JU is pleased to list some of our newest scholarships, started within the last few years by generous donations.  Many of them have already been awarded to students while a few will be given in the next academic year. 

The CDR Rick Murray Memorial Scholarship was established by Sherry Murray in memory of her late husband.  CDR Murray was a retired Naval Officer and Mrs. Murray was a teacher.  This scholarship combines both of their passions and is for students in the School of Education.
The David Valentine Scholarship was established in his memory this year by his friends and family.  He was a JU alumnus and was proud of this affiliation.  The recipient shall be a talented and financially needy student, maintaining a 3.0 GPA.
The Dr. George Kelley Science Scholarship, established by his wife, Charlotte Kelley, as well as family and friends.
The Dr. Lewis and Dr. Boehnke Science Scholarship, established by their former student, Dr. Rathbun (Bernie) Rhodes.
Two business scholarships established by the Randy Amos family in memory of their son, Scott Amos, a JU Alum:

The Peggy Simendinger Scholarship
for female minority students in need, established by Ted Simendinger in memory of his mother.

The Donald Tredinick Memorial Scholarship, funded by donations from his daughter,  Mary VanKempen.
The Eddie Harper and Debbie Douglas Memorial Scholarship, established by Steve Bushman in memory of the brother and sister of his wife, Pamela Bushman.
The George Ballis Scholarship for Theater Art Majors, established by Gordon Goede, founding director of Theatre 3 of Fresno, California to honor Mr. Ballis’ work in the Theatre Department at Jacksonville University. 
The Larry Riddle Scholarship for Technical Theater Majors, funded by his son and daughter and family friends.
The Tillie Fowler NROTC Scholarship, established in her memory by friends, colleagues, and supporters of the military.
The Otis Smith Athletic Scholarship, established by a gift from the Otis Smith Foundation.

The Maria Mitchell Observatory (MMO) will have up to six research positions in the summer of 2010 for qualified undergraduate students with interests in astronomy and physics. Deadline for Submission: February 15, 2010

2009-2010 Ambassador Marilyn McAfee Scholarship - This Jacksonville World Affairs Council scholarship is offered to students attending accredited, four-year universities and colleges in Jacksonville, which include: Edward Waters College, Florida State College at Jacksonville, the University of North Florida and Jacksonville University.  The scholarship is annual and awards one winner $1,200 to be used for academic purposes such as tuition/books and/or degree-affiliated study abroad programs.  In keeping with its long-standing tradition of helping women succeed, the Talbots Charitable Foundation is proud to present the 2010 Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund and the inaugural Nancy Talbot Scholarship Award for perseverance and ingenuity, which is presented in memory of the founder of Talbots. This program empowers women to enrich themselves through learning and achieve a college education later in life.  Completely re-imagined, the Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund will award $180,000 in college scholarships for the 2010 academic year, including ten $15,000 scholarships and one $30,000 scholarship to an extraordinary finalist demonstrating courage, conviction and an insatiable entrepreneurial spirit.   RULES AND APPLICATION: https://www.scholarshipamerica.org/talbotswomen  Application deadline: January 2, 2010.

Fall 2009 -$3000 Teacher Scholarships FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATIONAL DATA SYSTEMS  for any Florida teacher who:
• is a U.S. citizen and resident of Florida
• has been accepted in a post-baccalaureate degree seeking program at an accredited Florida private or public college or university 
• seeking a degree related to instructional computing or computer science
OR
• is taking courses to receive Florida Certification in computer instruction.

The $3000 Dr. Robert W. Sims Memorial Scholarship  Any post-secondary student with at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4 point system) and who is a U.S. citizen and resident of Florida attending an accredited Florida public or private college and is majoring in computer science/information technology related field, may apply. The applicant must be enrolled as a full time student as defined by his or her academic institution during the course of the award.  Applications must be received by February 15, 2009. http://www.faeds.org/ 

The Society of Women Engineers - The SWE Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. In fiscal year 2008, SWE disbursed more than 130 new and renewed scholarships valued at more than $400,000.  **You can only apply if you will be a Sophomore or above in college in the Fall of 2009.
The deadline to apply is February 28, 2009. 

Lighthouse International 2009 Scholarship and Career Awards - Now accepting applications for the five scholarships awarded across three categories: College-Bound, Undergraduate and Graduate. The criteria for eligibility are that applicants:   must be legally blind (i.e., have a best corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye, and/or a visual field of less than 20 degrees in the better eye); and  must be US citizens, and reside and attend an accredited school in any of the following states: CT, DE, FL, GA, MA, MD, MD, NC, NH, NJ NY, PA, RI, SC, VA, WV and VT, or Washington, DC.  Proof of citizenship will be required of all winners.  Scholarships are based on academic and personal achievements, and candidates are not required to demonstrate financial need.

The Objective of the Material Handling Education Foundation Scholarship Program is to promote the study of material handling and to expose as many students as possible to the material handling industry, including the vast array of equipment, systems and technologies represented by the industry; the role of material handling in a productive enterprise; and the many career paths available within the supplier, distributor and end-user (applications) sides of the industry. The goal of the scholarship program is to encourage choices upon graduation that will ultimately lead to careers within the industry and careers in teaching and research that will prepare the next generation of industry leaders. 
Programs of study eligible for Foundation scholarships include Civil, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering (and Engineering Technology); computer engineering; computer science; and business administration with an emphasis in production management, industrial distribution, supply chain, and/or logistics.    March 1, 2009 deadline.

Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA)  AFCEA's General Emmett Paige Scholarships award $2,000 to persons on active duty in the uniformed military services, to veterans, and to their spouses or dependents, who are working full time toward a degree at an accredited four-year colleges or universities in the U.S. (Veterans entering college as freshmen are eligible to apply; all others must be enrolled as sophomores or juniors at the time of application.) Application deadline is March 1. 

AFCEA's Milton E. Cooper/Young AFCEAN Graduate Scholarship program offers $3,000 to a young professional (age thirty-five or under) currently employed in a field related to communications, computer science or electronics.  Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to the pursuit of an advanced college degree (MS or Ph.D.) relating to communications, computer science, electronics/electrical engineering in preparation for a career in science or engineering. Application deadline is March 1. 

The 2009 Frank  L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship of $5000 is available for award to one or more undergraduate or graduate accounting students by the Government Finance Officers Association of The United States and Canada. The winner, if one is selected, will be invited to attend the Government Finance Officers Association’s annual conference in Seattle, Washington, June 28-July 1, 2009, where the award will be presented.
Eligibility:  Currently a fulltime student in an undergraduate or graduate accounting program for a career in state and local government finance. Undergraduate students must be in the process of completing at least their junior year by the time the scholarship is awarded.  Current or permanent resident of the United States or Canada.  Recommendation by student’s academic advisor or the chair of the accounting program.  Deadline for application: March 6, 2009.  Applications and additional information are available under:  “Student Opportunities” at their website, http://www.gfoa.org/

Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students - The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants is the national, professional organization for all Certified Public Accountants.They award scholarships of up to $5,000 to minority accounting students showing significant potential to become certified public accountants. Scholarships are available to full-time minority undergraduate or graduate accounting students at regionally accredited institutions. Eligible applicants are minorities of Black, Native American/Alaskan Native, Hispanic, or of Pacific Island races who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. National Association of Black Accountants, NABA, Jacksonville will be granting $1,000 scholarships to various students meeting the requirements listed.  See their web site for more info  http://www.nabajax.org/ .
~Be currently enrolled at a four-year United States college or university as a full-time (12 semester hours or equivalent), undergraduate freshman, sophomore, junior, or first-year senior accounting, finance, or business major or be a full-time graduate student (9 semester hours or equivalent) enrolled or accepted into a master’s-level business program.

.The Zonta Club of Jacksonville is offering a $750 scholarship to an area woman entering her third or fourth year of undergraduate studies in a business-related degree program. Applicants will be evaluated based on academic achievement during their first two to three years of studies. Students should also demonstrate their intent to complete a business degree and to pursue a career in business. First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (FCHCC) sponsors the 2009 Achieving the Dream Scholarship. Scholarships up to $2,000 to be awarded to Hispanic students that meet the following criteria:
• The applicant must be currently accepted to and planning to attend a two- or four-year university, or currently a full-time undergraduate student that has maintained a GPA average of 3.0 or better.
• The applicant must not be more than a third generation Hispanic with established residency in the Florida First Coast region: Duval, St. Johns, Clay, Baker or Nassau Counties; for at least three (3) years prior to the awarding date of the scholarship.

The Mayor’s Hispanic American Council is sponsoring scholarships for Hispanic students.  Eligibility is as follows:
# Be of Hispanic origin.
# A minimum of one completed academic year at your current University or College.
# An unofficial transcript showing a cumulative GPA of 3.5.
# Proof of community or voluntary service.
# Two professional letters of recommendation, and
# A one page typed essay stating your professional goals and why you believe you deserve the scholarship.

The Northeast Florida Chapter of Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) is pleased to offer the Chapter’s first annual undergraduate scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year.  WTS is an international organization of professionals who are committed to advancement of women in transportation related careers.  To encourage and support women pursuing careers in a transportation related field, the Northeast Florida WTS chapter is offering two $1,000.00 undergraduate scholarships to deserving students. The scholarships include the ‘Northeast Florida WTS Sharon D. Banks Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship’ and the ‘Northeast Florida WTS Molitoris Leadership Scholarship for Undergraduates.’ The recipients of the chapter’s local scholarships will also be nominated for the corresponding WTS International Scholarships, which are each $3,000.  Eligibility:
a. Open to women
b. Collegiate GPA equivalent of 3.0 or higher
c. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate associate or bachelors degree program in Northeast Florida in a transportation-related field, such as transportation engineering, planning, finance or logistics

2009-2010 The North Florida Frozen and Refrigerated Foods Association Doug Milne Scholarship is awarded to students at Jacksonville colleges pursuing a degree that you can relate to the frozen food industry!  Nutrition, marketing, business, PR, graphic art and design...  The key is you have to support this link/interest in the scholarship essay and interview.  If you can, you're in!  $1,000-2,00 award.  Must be at least a junior to apply.  Graduate students also eligible. 2009-2010 SEVEN Fund Essay Competition- “New Models of Development” The S.E.VEN Fund (SEVEN) is announcing its 2009 - 2010 Student Essay Competition. This year they are seeking essays on inspiring new models of economic development from around the globe. The competition will award one (1) student prize of $10,000. The Google Inc. 2010-2011 Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship Program will make awards to women to pursue careers in computing and technology.  Google hopes to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders in the field.   A group of female undergraduate and graduate students will be chosen from the applicant pool, and scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of each candidate's academic background and demonstrated leadership. All scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to attend the Annual Google Scholars' Retreat in Mountain View, California in 2010. 2010-2011 Scott Amos – Dr. Barry Thornton Leadership Scholarship and the Scott Amos-Pay it Forward Scholarship - The Scott Amos Scholarship is named in memory of Randall Scott Amos ’01/02. Scott graduated from JU with a Bachelor’s in Finance and a Masters in Business Administration. While attending JU, he was a student senator, Vice President of student government, President of Sigma Nu Fraternity and a member of Green Key. At the age of 24, Amos was appointed Chief Assistant Tax Collector for the City of Jacksonville and Duval County. He was an integral part of Jacksonville University’s “Save the Plate” license plate campaign and volunteered with many non-profit organizations in the city.  The award was established in 2007, one year after Scott’s untimely death.  His friends and family hope to assist students like Scott, who work hard academically, but are also actively involved in the many aspects of college life.  The scholarship has a value of approximately $5,000.  Eligibility criteria for the award are as follows:
1. You must be pursuing a major in the College of Business.
2. A Florida Bright Futures Scholar in good standing.
3. You should be either a junior or senior at the start of the next academic year. 
4. You must demonstrate an active involvement in school activities.
5. Renewal process involves awarding the Scott Amos-Pay it Forward Scholarship to recipient of initial award who continues to meet these criteria.
Return your completed application packet to the Dean’s office in the Davis College of Business by Feb 27, 2010. 

2010-2011 Peter Carlton Anderson Memorial Scholarship Award - Peter Carlton Anderson was an active member of the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity while a student at JU.  He lost his life on January 24, 1965 in the middle of his sophomore year.  Each year a business student will be selected for best exemplifying Peter’s dedication to his school through deeds, good scholarship, and outstanding service.  The scholarship has a value of at least $1,500.
Eligibility:
1. You must be pursuing a major in the College of Business.
2. You must be a sophomore or junior at the time of application. 
3. You must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
4. You must demonstrate an active involvement in school activities.

2010-2011 Don Baker Creager Award for Botany  Now accepting applications.  Award amount varies with endowment earnings and proposed use of award funds; range is $100-500 per year.  Applications are reviewed and recipients are determined by a committee of faculty selected from within the JU Division of Science and Mathematics in the Spring semester.  Applications must be submitted electronically to Dr. Nisse Goldberg (ngoldbe@ju.edu) by February 27, 2010.  Please use your full name as the file name.  Click here for an application.

The 2010-2011 Bert L. Thomas Scholarship is named after a World War II vet who served in the Quartermaster Corps as Executive Officer under future Winn-Dixie founder, James E Davis.  After the war he was hired by JE Davis and eventually became President of Winn-Dixie Stores in 1965.  At the time of his death in 1982, he was head of Florida’s largest company.  He was a member of the JU Board of Trustees for 13 years, serving as treasurer and chairman of the finance committee.  Following the values of Bert Thomas, the recipient of this scholarship should be a Business major who has worked to pay a portion of his or her college expenses.     The scholarship has a value of at least $1,500.
Eligibility:
1. You must be pursuing a major in the College of Business.
2. You must be a sophomore or junior at the time of application. 
3. You must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
4. You must have worked to help pay your tuition, demonstrate leadership, and show potential for success in the business world.

2010-2011 Richard D. Sanborn Scholarship Fund - Richard D. Sanborn was a distinguished attorney, transportation executive, civic leader, and staunch supporter of America’s free enterprise system.  He was an active member of the JU Board of Trustees, so his friends established this scholarship to honor him and to perpetuate his memory after his death in 1989.  The scholarship has a value of at least $1,500.
Eligibility:
1. You must be pursuing a major in the College of Business.
2. You must be a sophomore or junior at the time of application. 
3. You must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
4. You must have worked to help pay your tuition, demonstrate leadership, and show potential for success in the business world.

2010-2011 Eddie Harper and Debbie Douglas Memorial Scholarship - Established in memory of the brother and sister of JU alum, Pamela Bushman.  It is a one thousand dollar award.  The recipient will be a talented JU student with financial need selected by the University from applications submitted by February 27, 2010. Preference will be given to applicants who are members of Alpha Delta Pi, the sorority Mrs. Bushman supported as a JU student.  Return your completed application packet to the Howard Building office of Institutional Advancement by Feb. 27.  Click here for application.

Sea Star Line LLC Scholarship Award - As a full-service, intermodal shipping company, Sea Star takes cargo from the customer’s point of departure to the market destination.  The Sea Star Line Scholarship at Jacksonville University offers business students a $2,500 renewable scholarship that includes a paid internship with the company.  Eligibility:
1. Business Administration, Marketing or International Business major .
2. At least a sophomore status at time of application. 
3. Have and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA at JU.
4. Agree to participate in a Sea Star Line internship for at least two semesters.

2010-2011 Northeast Florida Association of Environmental Professionals (NEFAEP) Scholarship at Jacksonville University was established by the NEFAEP Chapter as part of the their community and outreach program.  Its purpose is to aid and encourage capable students in pursuing professional careers within any science field studied at JU.  It is awarded annually and is open to rising juniors or seniors, and can be applied towards tuition to cover a science related class or as a grant for environmentally-related research.  The award amount varies with endowment earnings and may vary between is $100 and $800 per year.  Applications must be submitted electronically to Dr. Daniel A. McCarthy (dmccart1@ju.edu) by February 27, 2010, please use your full name as the file name.  Awards will be announced at the Division/COAS Honors Convocation, or other public venue, in the spring.  Please note: Although applications are accepted every year, this is a merit based award and therefore it may not be awarded every year.  Click here for an application.

The Hispanic College Fund scholarship program is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 academic year! The program is open to students of Hispanic background majoring in business, finance, accounting, computer science, computer engineering, IT, hospitality management, hotel management, culinary, food & beverage, and many more! Scholarships awards are up to $17,000. Elizabeth Edgar Hall Scholarships for women with financial need.  Elizabeth Edgar Hall provides financial assistance for women seeking a more productive future through post-secondary education in Jacksonville.  Scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students.  Types of scholarships include:
    • Elizabeth Edgar Hall Scholarships ($500 to $2,000)
       Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

    • The Della M. Levy Scholarship ($2,500)
       Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

    • The Isabelle V. King Scholarship ($1,000)
       Applicants must have been accepted as a secondary education major
       with a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

AICPA Minority Scholarship Program -  created to encourage students of ethnically diverse backgrounds pursue accounting degrees and become CPAs.  Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership and commitment to pursuing the CPA credential. 2010 Florida Council of the Blind Scholarship Program is offering four scholarships consisting of awards totaling $6750.00. These are offered to outstanding students who are enrolled in academic education or professional training beyond the high school level. Applicant must be a resident of the State of Florida. However, the college or university doesn't necessarily have to be in Florida. All applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade-point average.
The prestigious Gayle M. Krause-Edwards $2,500.00 scholarship requires a 3.2 grade point average and completion of one semester in a College or University to be considered. This scholarship will be awarded to one student exhibiting outstanding academic and leadership achievements.

Army Nurse Corps Association 2010 Scholarship Program  - In 2010, the scholarships will be awarded in memory of Captain Gussie M. Jones, AN, who died of non-battle related causes in Iraq.  She was the first African-American Army Nurse to die while assigned to a theater of operations.  There is not a military service obligation for the student receiving this scholarship.  Scholarship ROTC students are not eligible.  ANCA scholarships are $3,000 per selected applicant.

The Leon Bradley Scholarship Program is established to encourage more minorities or persons of color to enter the teaching profession. AASPA believes that it is of benefit for all students to experience diversity among the teachers who serve as role models for our students. Thus, the American Association of School Personnel Administrators (AASPA) will annually award two scholarships to assist a minority college student seeking their initial teaching certification and/or endorsement. One scholarship will be for $2000 granted for the student's final year, which includes student teaching. The second scholarship will be for $1000 granted for a minority paraprofessional career-changer in his/her final year of teacher preparation.  Applicant must reside in these states/provinces or be currently matriculating at a college or university within these states/provinces: Alabama, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. John Gyles Education Awards 2010  -  The John Gyles Education Awards are available each year to students in both Canada and   the United States. They are the result of a private, benevolent endeavor established in 1990. Full Canadian or American citizenship is a requirement. Awards are available to both male and female students in all areas of post secondary study. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Criteria other than strictly academic ability and financial need are considered in the selection process. Selected students will receive up to $3,000.00.
