PROMOTIONS AND APPOINTMENTS

Dr. Russell Baker, associate professor of management information systems, was named Jacksonville University’s 2008 Professor of the Year at the 50th annual Faculty Recognition Dinner on March 31. Baker has been a part of the JU faculty since 2004 and was recognized as JU’s Scholar of the Year for 2007.

Dr. Julius Demps, adjunct professor in the Davis College of Business, received the award for best presenter at the annual Economic and International Business Research Conference on December 12, 2007 in Miami. His presentation entitled "The Effects of Positive Reinforcement on the Academic Behavior of Mildly Disabled Middle School Students" was one of 50 presentations by professors from around the world. The accompanying article (co-written by management professors Dr. Mohamad Sepehri and Dr. Gordon Arbogast) was subsequently published in the latest edition of The Business Review Cambridge. Demps was also named JU's 2007 Accelerated Degree Program Professor of the Year last fall.

Dr. Barbara Doyle, professor of computer information systems, received Jacksonville University’s Institutional Excellence Award for leadership in programming. Doyle, who authored: C# Programming: From Analysis to Program Design, Second Edition (Course Technology, 2007) received a $1,000 reward and was recognized at a JU Board of Trustees meeting on September 30, 2007.

Dr. Janet M. Haavisto, professor of English, was elected as the new faculty chair by her colleagues and began the two-year term on May 5, 2007.

Faculty promotions to begin fall 2007 semester include: Dr. Michael Adams, promoted to associate professor of finance and accounting; Dr. Robert Boylan, promoted to associate professor of finance and accounting; Dr. John Buck, promoted to full professor of economics; Dr. Kim Capriotti, promoted to associate professor of finance and accounting; Dr. Steven MacIsaac, promoted to associate professor of political science; Dr. Joana Owens, promoted to associate professor of Humanities; Dr. Barry Thornton promoted to associate professor of economics; Tony Steve promoted to assistant professor of contemporary and world music; Scott Watkins promoted to assistant professor of piano; and Dr. Margaret Janz, promoted to professor emeritus.

Several professors were approved for tenure at the April Board of Trustees meeting: Dr. Russ Baker, associate professor of management; Dr. Robert Boylan, associate professor of finance and accounting; Dr. David Luechauer, associate professor of management; Dr. Joana Owens, associate professor of Humanities; and Dr. Curtis Small, assistant professor of biology.
