JU’s Dr. Rody Borg volunteers for 11th year at Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week

Article

Economist Dr. Rody Borg of JU’s Davis College of Business volunteered July 5-13 at Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.

Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week is an intensive program that educates high school students about the American free enterprise system. This was the 11th year Borg has volunteered as a company advisor, working with students as they manage a computerized manufacturing business simulation and prepare for a Friday stockholder’s meeting and advertising and marketing presentation.

Sharing their knowledge and expertise, company advisors address the most significant issues facing business today in straightforward, informal discussion with students.

Judged by company executives, the end-of-week presentations include discussing income statements and balance sheets for eight quarters, and the students create and perform radio and television commercials. The company for which Borg was the advisor, “Regalos,” received recognition as “Top Company” among 24 companies competing.

The intense week combines the analytical work of managing production, inventory and finances with the creative side of marketing and selling products. Also, keynote speakers address business topics, leadership and motivation, helping the participants understand and appreciate the challenges facing the businesses throughout the global marketplace.

Borg joined the Jacksonville University faculty in 1984 and was the 2006 Professor of the Year. He has served as JU’s MBA program director, the Center for American Free Enterprise director, faculty chair, and twice served as the Davis College of Business interim dean.
