Communication students have the opportunity to complete a maximum of four internships, enabling them to earn up to a total of 12 credit hours. Prerequisites for internships include a minimum of 60 earned hours and a minimum of a 3.0 GPA in communication. A wide variety of internships are available with Jacksonville media outlets, companies, organizations and institutions. Internships are also available at Walt Disney World in Orlando and in the Los Angeles film, television and entertainment industry through a cooperative agreement with Emerson College.
Communication graduates enter many fields including journalism, public relations, advertising, radio, television, graphic design, management, marketing, education, social services and the arts. They seek careers as producers, on-air-talent, special event coordinators, media buyers, media relations representatives, account executives or designers. Communication has proven a valuable major for those entering the corporate, not-for-profit, retail, governmental and institutional sectors as customer service and marketing representatives, program coordinators, management trainees, sales representatives and training specialists. The communication major also serves as a foundation for graduate and professional study in communication, business, law, social work, and library science.
